{July 28, 2016}   A nice end to a busy day

Shouldn’t they all be like that?

The day started early with some time on the treadmill, the elliptical machines were both busy. It’s been a while since I’ve been on a treadmill, let the sweat pour!

Of to the office for a very busy day,  good lunch company, more busy and work,  problem solved,  whew! then a good bi-weekly check-in with my manager.

After work, I went with one of my co-workers, who I have become good friends with, LJ, to get much needed pedicures and then we ordered food while we walked back to get apartment. IWe ate,  talked and watched the Wednesday night fireworks at Navy Pier. I also got to meet and play with her sweet cat, Max, sigh.

Then back to the hotel, a prior work and now I’m talking to you.

Pretty good day,  huh?

Isn’t that what they say? Well, if you all me, it’s true! Good thing I’m moving to an island!

Today was a good day at the beach, better than a walk in the park, sorry, I couldn’t help myself.

I talked to GES the other day and she said they might be going to the beach and she’d let me know when they would be heading out. I got a text this morning and away I went.

JK’s mom, he’s a friend of ACS, has a house in Nantasket a block from the beach, paradise. I got there,  changed into my suit and headed down to the beach and surprised EJS and MGS.

There was laughing, silliness, splashing, boogie boarding, body surfing, shell hunting, foot burying, walking, napping, running from the waves, jumping into the waves, hanging out, talking and having a great time.

There is great people watching at the beach, we saw families, teenagers, old, young, silly, goofy, even what someone called the beached whales! These are a group of, let’s just say round, older women who line up their chairs to face the sun and their skin looks like tanned leather,  you know they’ve been doing this for centuries! and every once in a while they get up two to three at a time to put their feet in and splash water on themselves.

It’s a really nice beach, the water is clear, the people are nice and it’s not too crowded.

I think I’ve told you how my brother-in-law knows a lot of people, right? He’s from Massachusetts, went to summer camp in Massachusetts and went to UMASS for college.

That being said, he runs into people he knows everywhere. He and GES went for a walk and ran into three people he knew, either from camp or college. JK went to the same camp,  that’s how they met, so you can imagine what it’s like!

We even got to see a family we became friends with that we met at Atlantis so many years ago! That was fun, the kids have gotten so big!

GES and I finally packed it in scout 5pm, went back to the house to take showers and hung out on the porch while we waited for everyone else. It was nice sitting on the front porch watching and saying hello to everyone walking home from the beach.

Everyone else got there about 630, took quick showers and we headed out to get some dinner. We chose a place on the water, it was lovely.  As we are getting out food, the manager asks if my brother-in-law is ACS, turns out…they went to camp together! Go figure! Then a couple walked by who used to live next door to him growing up! Seriously people,  what are the odds?

After dinner, a quick trip to Old Navy, then time to say goodnight.

And that is what I will say to you. Goodnight.

{June 24, 2016}   Sharing the vegan love

I know you know in a vegan,  my friends and colleagues know,  but it’s not something I push on anyone.

There are jokes about vegans out there “How do you know someone is a vegan? The tell you in the first five minutes of meeting them!” Ha ha, very funny.  Well that’s not me. I like being vegan, but I don’t push it on anyone and I would never force anyone to be vegan. But if you have questions or want to know something, I’ll answer as best I can.

Most people find out I’m vegan when they make restaurant suggestions and I have to tell them my criteria. My coworkers have been great at our get togethers, always making sure I can get something when I’m there, I appreciate it so much. Don’t think my friends aren’t the same way!

Sometimes when I am having a conversation about it someone will say “oh, I want to try it,  but I don’t think I could do it”, “I want to go vegan cold turkey”, so to speak. I’m happy to share knowledge,  even recommendations. Sometimes it’s just, “do to want to taste what I’ve got?”

I’m always honest about what I think is good, I’ll tell you if it’s passable, I don’t think all vegan is awesome.  Do you remember me telling you about the cheese that smelled like feet? See,  honest!

And that happened at work this week. One of my new coworkers said she wants to go vegan. Ok…Tuesday she went with me and we had vegan for lunch at a place I like, and it’s the only vegan place near the training site. She loved what she tried,  she was blown away!

Yesterday, I took two of my new coworkers to the vegan place,  they were amazed! So was I! I had a new item on their menu and it was awesome! A kale salad with Seiten “chicken”. Wow! Guess what! My third new coworker wants to join us tomorrow! Suweet!

I’ll let you know how it goes!

{June 21, 2016}   A reunion and Second City!

Today I saw a friend from college and went to see The Second City company!

JO’S is a friend from college who I haven’t seen in about 23 years! She happened to be coming to Chicago and check to see if I would be available.

As it turns out,  tonight worked for both of us and…she had reservations at Second City, the improve repot troupe. This is something I have  always wanted to see! Some amazing talent came out of there! John Candy, Gilda Radner, Dan Ackroyd, Jane Curtin, just to name a few.

I left my hotel to pick her and her friend/co-worker, then headed to Second City. We didn’t have time to get some food before, they have a kitchen,  so we decided to eat there.

After we got into the club,  found out that the kitchen was having problems, so no food,  what? I never got to stop and get something after the airport, so I haven’t really eaten since I left Hawaii, um, I’m a little hungry! Oh well.

The show was great! Is improv, so it’s always hit or miss. It took a minute to build, then…bam! There were still some things that were like “huh?”, there were things that were specific to Chicago and sports,  didn’t help me,  ha ha. There was topical and typical  [typical was actually a typo, but it fit!] political humor,  some racist humor,  it may have gone too far,  but who am I to say about what’s funny to others. Besides, I think I’m hysterical, so there you go! Let’s just say,  my cheeks still hurt from laughing.

After the regular performance, they try out new material. Let’s just say…keep rehearsing…they did try out something new with an audience member and it was great! One of the players only spoke Spanish and the volunteer they got spoke Spanish, which they didn’t know when they brought her up,  or did they…she translated for both players on stage,  very funny.

After the show we were ‘starvin’ like Marvin’ and I don’t know about them,  but my head was about to explode! so we went across the street to the pub for grub.

Let me just tell you,  catching up was fabulous! I can’t believe it’s been 23 years! Oh, we stalk on Facebook so we have an idea of things, and she reads my posts, thank you! But in person, amazing. We couldn’t stop talking! I know “what? JJ not stop talking? Impossible!”

We talked family, work, lives, travel and does she get to travel for work! Oh my! She and her friend arrange conferences [I hope I remembered correctly! And they are global! Then we talked day to day, cars, shopping, like we has just seen each other last week, so comfortable, really nice.

I hope we’re able to keep the promise to not wait 23 years to see each other again!

Best quote of the night “Sometimes you just have to laugh, it’s good for the soul”. No truer words could be said…especially at a comedy club!

{June 19, 2016}   Happy birthday CKM!

Another year older and a great reason to celebrate! It’s CKM’s birthday!

Let me tell you about my friend,  CKM…

We met about nine years ago,  at JFT’s house,  just before I separated and got divorced from the wasband.  She was friends with a friend of mine and the three of us started spending time together, I even filled in for her at her job when she went out for surgery.

We started hanging out more and more, doing fun stuff, volunteering for events,  movies,  shows,  even taking some weekend trips.

We’ve been through a lot together over the years, been there for each other, probably she’s there for me more than the other way around, I’ve had quite the ride over the last few years. Very happy to have that!

We’ve experienced a lot of new, odd and exciting experiences over the years and it’s been a fun and interesting ride.

She works too hard,  she currently has four jobs, partly because she enjoys them and partly because she has a good heart and has a hard time saying no, especially to a friend.

One of her important jobs right now, which is so important to me, is helping SDL with Miss A while she’s in an EMBA program. Is that cool beans or what?

She is a fantastic photographer, a creative artist, creative cook, open to trying some things and unfortunately for her, hanging out with SDL and me, her language has gotten more colorful, sorry CKM.

Her birthday and holiday gifts are always creative and spot on, so much fun to get. I love planning things with her, for us, each other or others.

Speaking of planning,  she’s an event planner and an extraordinary one! There are times she knows my schedule better then I do! I always say that if I win the stupid lottery, I would hire her as my personal event planner!

I hope she has the best birthday ever, she deserves nothing but the best! Xoxo

My sister.

She’s fabulous.

We celebrated.

The end.

Kidding. My sister has a birthday coming up this week and while dad, LaLa and I were in town this weekend, ACS thought it would be a great excuse to celebrate GES’ special day.

He was right. There were about 14 of us at a fantastic restaurant owned by a friend of hers. Bacco, a great Italian restaurant  http://www.bacconorthend.com/

Good food, drinks,  good friends, family, atmosphere and the entire upper floor singing happy birthday.  What could be better?

Nothing!

So,  over the past few years Memorial Day weekend has been interesting, to say the least.

Well,  years ago,  when I still lived in Georgia, Memorial Day weekend was for the Blue Ridge Arts Festival in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Sometimes it involved a weekend stay, sometimes just a day. 2003, it involved a bringing a brand new six week old kitten home!  That would be Jymy.

Sometimes it would also involve a trip with the kids for tubing in Helen, GA.

Four years ago, this weekend, I got Annie 2!! I had been looking for her for a long time and I found her! The dealer even let me take her home for the weekend while I decided if I definitely wanted the car [ha ha] and worked on financing. I said yes on the Monday of the weekend. Ahhh…Happy.

Three years ago I packed up my house, and a moving truck with A Lot of help and headed for them thar hills and ended up at the foot of the Flat Iron Mountains. Unloaded the truck, with a lot less help and started a new life in Colorado.

Two years ago I got home on a Friday from my week at work in Michigan and spent the weekend packing my things, to be loaded into a storage unit and ended my new life in Colorado. Well,  not ended,  that sounds so harsh! Just started a new chapter, visiting instead of living there full time and it’s been good,  I visit my storage units when I go skiing or to visit Colorado.

Last year was good experience, I spent it with PSM and my family. I went to “Lobstahfest” at my sister’s house and enjoyed the Spring in Boston. This year I’m with family again,  although no PSM, he’s off in paradise somewhere…boo hoo. I’ll be there next year,  no complaining!

I think low key holiday weekends are the way to go! I hope you enjoyed yours!

Today is that very special day that we honor our mothers.

Mothers come in all shapes, sizes and forms. We are young, old, every color of the rainbow.  We give birth, we adopt, we marry and become step parents. Our children are two legged human, three and four legged furry. We are teachers, care givers, role models, guardians, playmates, disciplinarians. If we’re very lucky,  one day we become grandmothers.

Each mother is unique in her own way.

Our mom was an amazing woman. She was giving, loving, silly, serious, smart, sarcastic, cultured, a foodie who could go out for fine cuisine on Monday and a pb&j on Tuesday. Breakfast for dinner, experiments for new dishes.

When I decided I wanted to be a vegetarian, she was great,  always looking for new recipes to try,  even going so far as to make two meals,  one for me and one for everyone else or one for the two of us and one for my dad and sister.

She and dad made us the best birthday parties, an amazing hostess for holiday, family and everyday gatherings. She was the inspiration for the parties I did for my kids and my sister does for EJS and MGS.

I remember getting an email from my daughter thanking me for so much and the memories of those birthdays. I know the girls will remember the parties their mom threw for them. I know we all do!

I know I’ve told you about my amazing sister, one of the most fantastic mothers I know. To watch her each year as she grows as a woman and a mother is a joy, treat and an honor. I know our mom is proud of her, I know I am.

I had a wonderful treat for Mother’s Day myself or should I say treats. The day started with brunch with my sister and brother-in-law, just the three of us, so nice. Then there were hugs and kisses from MGS and EJS.

image

I also received some fantastic presents. Pictures made by EJS and MGS, photos they selected, a beautiful Chinese ink drawing by my dad and the other day, pictures from Baby A and his sister ELB.

The next amazing and wonderful thing that happened to me was when I was at the airport. I’ve told you here and there about my daughter TH and her brother CH.

TH’s birthday is today and every year, I send her a birthday message and today was no different. Well, what was different is that I found out she was married a few months ago. She’s now THL, I’m very happy for her,  she seems very happy, which means everything to me.

What made me need a box of kleenex is what she said next. She is going to be a mother and she wants me to be a part of her child’s life. One of the things I always hoped when I was with her dad, helping to raise her, was to one day share in her joys of being a mother and my dreams is going to come true, my baby is having a baby. I’m tearing up writing this.

Happy Mothers Day to all the amazing mothers out there. To those I know and love, admire and cherish, women I am honored to call family, SDL, LBK, TS, JCT, DL, CC, LGR, KWH, KAB, CS, SV, CGS.

Happy Mothers Day LaLa!

And happy mother’s day to you my friends and family,  you are all fabulous and wonderful and I love you all!

{May 4, 2016}   Happy Hour and Dinner

It wad a good day, ended very nicely.

After a good day of training, I joined the team for happy hour at a bar near the office.  It was great,  I met more people, got to know others better and blend in even more.

Our numbers started to dwindle and eventually,  there were just a few of us left. MS, the implementation lead and very smart man who brought me on to the project, and I left to get some dinner.

We went to a great place called La Scarola,
http://www.lascarola.com/. It is an Italian restaurant, two rooms, but small almost hole on the wall feeling. The place was packed and the got us at one of the last tables in the corner in front of the window.

It was a little get to know each other, what are my goals, where to you see yourself, that sort of thing.  Then it was families,  travel,  life outside of work,  quite enjoyable. It’s nice when you have the opportunity to get to know someone one on one,  away from everything else, better working relationship.

We had grilled calamari, I ate some, it was really good, but I think that might be it for me for calamari. It was Italian and I went for it,  eggplant parmigiano, fabulous mistake! So good, but so bad. I couldn’t finish any of it,  the portions were huge! Looking for someone who might be hungry today!

By the time we finished it was about ten pm, time to catch a cab and head back to our respective domiciles.

I put on my jammies and started talking to you and let’s just say I was so tired I dozed off a few times trying to finish!

But I did it and now…zzzzzzz

PS…Maybe the fourth be with you!
