Let’s explore together, shall we?

After a lovely and filling breakfast, we headed out to greet the day and Copenhagen. The streets are so pretty to walk down and admired and wonder at. Do you see the halo over the building? We thought it was cool too!

Our first stop was the Rundetaarn, or Rundetårn (Round Tower in English), is a 17th-century tower located in central Copenhagen, Denmark. One of the many architectural projects of Christian IV, it was built as an astronomical observatory.

One of the cool parts of the tower is the equestrian staircase,  so if you wanted to, you could ride your horse all e way up…and who wouldn’t want to do that?

There was also a toilet in the tower.  The toilet was used by the researchers and astronomers working in the tower and consisting of a seat almost at the top and a shaft leading down to the bottom floor built into the hollow core. This shaft has no way of emptying it nor any ventilation to the outside, making it arguably one of the world’s largest and earliest septic tanks. Um…can you say ewe?

One of my favorite features of the observatory of the tower was wrought iron fence. Each panel was different, aren’t they awesome?!

After the tower…history! This was our walk to the National Museum of Denmark.

On our way to the museum we passed by the Synagogue, which was closed, but we saw the tribute to Dan Uzan who was murdered on February 15, 2015. He was part of the volunteer security for a bat mitzvah that night.

On 14–15 February 2015, two separate shootings occurred in Copenhagen, Denmark. Two victims and the Islamic terrorist were killed, while five police officers were wounded.

The National Museum of Denmark (Nationalmuseet) is Denmark’s largest museum of cultural history, comprising the histories of Danish and foreign cultures, alike.
It was interesting, Danish history, vikings, cultures from around the world. it was bigger than we realized and we enjoyed several hours touring.

After history, we wanted to see some art, so off to the National Gallery of Denmark (Danish: Statens Museum for Kunst, also known as “SMK”).

The museum collects, registers, maintains, researches and handles Danish and foreign art dating from the 14th century to the present day.
The first thing we saw were a bunch of installation art pieces…um. Then we moved on to surrealism, yup surreal. Then some French, impressionists, Danish, the gamut. We both really enjoyed it.

By now, everything is closing, it’s ‘suppah-time’! We walked to the Copenhagen Street Food Market. This is basically a waterside marketplace featuring independent food stalls & trucks selling snacks, meals & drinks.

We crossed a bridge over the canal, walked a bit and there it was. There was an installation art piece by Yoko Ono, very cool actually, a forest of wishing trees. Take a piece of paper, write your wish on it and hang it on one of the trees. Unfortunately for us…no more wishes available. It was neat to see all the wishes in different languages.

Walking into the Stree Food Market was great, all these food trucks,  sights, sounds, smells. It was noisy, but warm, cozy and inviting. You took a seat where there was one available and the food didn’t  seem overpriced, I would say just like any food trucks anywhere, but we know that’s not true! it really was a great experience.

Then it was back to the hotel, up to the executive lounge to relax, have some beverages and talk about the day.

Who knows what tomorrow has in store for us! I’ll keep you posted!

We started the morning in Vik, checked out and went across the street for breakfast.

Catch…they weren’t open for breakfast! We got some tea and what we thought we buttered croissants, but turned out to be ham and cheese. Improvise, eat around that stuff!

The weather today? Rain, rain and more rain and not just rain, RAIN…sideways, front ways, just rain! First stop, before our first stop…Icelandic Wear for some rain gear for me! I am now the proud owner of rain pants and a snazzy waterproof jacket, score!

Now, in the car and first stop, black sand beach. This was spectacular! The black sand, still larger rocks for part of the beach, silt in others and small rocks the rest.

This is not a beach for swimming or bathing, as it were. They have what are called “deadly sneaker waves”. These will sneak up on you, literally and can draw you under and that’s that…to be blunt.

The depth of the ocean, the intensity of the waves, the amazing natural splendor, the rock formations, the view, the wind, even the rain couldn’t dampen, ha ha, our experience!

After a thorough soaking, well, but thorough thanks to my new reason gear, which, by the way, will now be a part of my trip essentials, we went to the Black Sand Beach Restaurant. We had turnip soup, sandwiches and some bar like thing for dessert. Oh and hot tea, of course to warm our cold hands.

It is one of the ten most beautiful beaches on Earth. Its stretch of black basalt sand is one of the wettest places in Iceland. The cliffs west of the beach are home to many seabirds, most notably puffinswhich burrow into the shallow soils during the nesting season. Offshore lie stacks of basalt rock, remnants of a once more extensive cliffline Reynisfjall, now battered by the sea. There is no landmass between here and Antarctica and the Atlantic rollers can attack with full force.

According to folklore, they are former trolls who tried to drag their boats out to sea only to be caught by the rising dawn. The sea around them is rather wild and stormy, so travelers will not be surprised to discover a monument to the memory of drowned seamen on the beach.

After the black sand beach we got back in the car to head back to Reykjavik, the rain determined what we could and couldn’t do today, and a lot of outdoor stuff was not in the cards.

Fear not friends, we found things to do. We had lunch in a greenhouse! Victor, do you remember him from the other day? He told us about Fridheimer, off, way off the beaten path, is one of the many greenhouses in Iceland and the unique thing about this was you get to eat in the greenhouse, among the tomatoes and the bees. We couldn’t see the bees, they were doing their thing away from the tables. [The video is the bees in a box]

They had fresh tomatoe soup, bread, pasta and flat breads, different “Mary” drinks [bloody, Christmas, virgin, healthy], tomatoe shots, this was Brennivin in a tomatoe, tomatoe ice cream, tomatoe cheesecake and apple and tomatoe piece.

It was warm, not just because we were in a greenhouse, it was warm and inviting and a unique experience.

From their website: Have you gone out to dinner in a greenhouse? The unique food experience at the restaurant, where the tomatoes grow all around! Tomato soup and freshly baked bread along with other delicacies in the cozy environment within the plant.

The common thread in the kitchen Friðheimar the tomatoes in various forms. And no wonder, for four types of tomatoes are grown in greenhouses where meal are brought forward within the tomato plants.Food experience that has few parallels. Come and enjoy!

And we did enjoy! Even chatted with some girls from the States, three were from NYC and one who’s mom grew up where I did. We shared some stories and gave them suggestions on places and things to eat, like the reindeer at the Blue Lagoon and the fermented shark bites at Cafe Loki.

Last stop…Harpa Theatre to see Icelandic Saga. Basically, the biggest hits, as they called them, in 75 minutes.

We learned about Hallgerda Long-Pants, Gunnlaug Serpent Tongue, Killer-Glum, Harald with the great hair-do, Mjoll the-biggest-of-all-women-who-were-not-giants and Leif the Lucky who found America… and lost it again.

The show was funny and fabulous and we laughed and learned. We also heard one of the sagas or tales we learned on the Golden Circle Tour, hell truly hath no fury like a woman scorned!

Presented by two of Icelands finest actors Icelandic Sagas – The Greatest hits is a 75 minute theatrical comedy roller coaster ride through Iceland’s literary heritage.

The Icelandic Sagas are the 40 true stories of the first settlers of Iceland – Well, Icelanders say they’re true. Everyone else says: Get out of here!

Another fabulous day in Iceland, but sadly, this part of our adventure has come to an end, awe…
But not to fear friends and family! our next great adventure begins tomorrow…very early tomorrow. As we speak, we are in a hotel near the airport, getting a few hours of sleep before our 630 am flight to…

Ha, you thought it was that easy? Nope, you’ll just have to wait!

Goodnight frá Íslandi

{November 5, 2016}   A first meeting and a wedding!

What a day! Let me tell you about it!

First thing, well, laundry doesn’t count so forget that! But a grandson and a wedding does!

I met my grandson!!!! I drove out to see TYL and my almost one month old grandson,  CDL! Oh friends, I wish I could share his photo, but aren’t those teeny little feet the best?!

He was dozing when I got there, so i just stared at him for a while, touching his feet, legs, head, oh that full head of hair!! as he was waking up, it was time to eat so I help him while TYL went to get his bottle. Then I got to feed him,  the boy can eat! then some burping, more snuggling, talking. oh,  we talked , about what the world has to offer, the places we’ll go, the trips we’ll take. what fun we’ll have!

I was there for a few hours, we went through two diaper changes and one and a half bottles and good conversation, memories and good family time. JL, TYL’s husband,  came in at some point,  we caught up and then he was outside working on Granny’s car, he’s a good kid.

It was finally time to leave, sigh, and on my way out I got to meet Granny and her sister, lovely people.

Next… I have a feeling you won’t be surprised that I changed into my dress for the wedding while I was driving!

I made it to the wedding, whew! I went in and found friends! RJS has invited and included me in many celebrations with her friends and family that I know quote a few of them, so this was even more special.

This day was 15 years in the making. when I met RJS on a project they had been together about 7 years and here we are 8 years later.

The entire wedding took place at The Variety Works, with a wonderful open barn feel, exposed beams, high rafters, rustic light fixtures and chandeliers. We were on the first level for the ceremony and reception. The tables were already set on the outside of the room, the center had the chairs set up with the aisle down the middle.

When we arrived, we were escorted by RJS’ nephews to our seats along with handing us a packet of tissues! they look so handsome, the boys, not the tissues! I saw her brother, JS, and he looked so very happy, it was nice to catch up with him before the ceremony. He is the reason RJS was working where we met, so I’ve known him just as long, wow.

The ceremony began and oh my, she looked just like she felt, a princess. Her dress was beautiful, hair perfect, the bejelewed earrings and headband sparkled almost as much as she did. And the pop of red of her shoes,  loved it! KS looked so handsome in his suit and maroon bow tie and when he saw her, sigh.

The ceremony was brief but sweet, meaningful and full of so much joy, not just from the bride and groom, but from everyone in the room. One of my favorite parts was when the minister asked if they would take each other and would we, the friends and family, support them in their choice to join their lives forever. We all replied with a resounding “We will!”

After the ceremony the happy couple and the family went outside for photos while the guests had drinks and hors d’oeuvres. More catching up with friends old and making new ones, RJS has a way of bringing the most wonderful people together.

There was eating, drinking, dancing, laughing, glass clinking for kisses from the bride and groom. There were 45 guests, a perfect number to have a crowd and be intimate at the same time.

As we left, on the table were keychains with glass beads that RJS had made for everyone. Beautiful.

I’m so very honored that I was included in this very special day, I would not have missed it for the world. I wish you so much happiness and Mazel for your lives together. Congratulations RJS and KS, I love you both!

{November 2, 2016}   A perfect fortune

Tonight I was feeling like a Chinese takeaway for dinner.

The food was alright, the fortune…well that was pure perfection and just what I needed to hear/read.

“Long life with blessings of family & friends is yours”

I am truly lucky in my life with the family and friends who have come into my life and remained.

I am an aunt to so many amazing children, my sisters children and my amazing friends who have given me the honorary title. I am a grandmother! to six fabulous children, I can’t tell you what that means to me, maybe you have an idea…

My close friends, who I call family, luckily accept me for who I am, faults and all.

My immediate family and our friends, who are like extended family. I have moms, dads, sisters, brothers, could I be any luckier?

And most recently… PSM and his friends and family have taken me in as one of their own.

Could you burst from so much love, family,  friends and awesomeness! I might!

So…fortune accurate? I would say so. I love you all!

{October 27, 2016}   An interesting place for dinner

Another roll-off diner. Another see you soon. Another good luck with your next endeavor.

And…another great restaurant! We went to The Bedford, the building used to be a back which they converted. It was a great concept! The bank vault was a separate party room, the bathroom doors look like office doors or the room you could look at your private property if you have a security box of your own.

It was dark and they had it decorated for Halloween, all the touches were subtle and fit in perfectly with the decor.

A good atmosphere for a private party, intimate dinner or just stopping in for a drink at the bar [to watch the Cubs beat the Indians 5-1…go Cubs!]

The food was interesting, creative, like deviled eggs on bacon dust. Have you ever heard of bacon dust? Me neither! The nice thing,  it was creative and good. No,  I did not have the bacon dust!!

You know my team goes to some nice and fun places,  this was one! Good luck NW, you’re going to rock your new project! See you when you’re in Chicago!

What a day!

It started way to early…6am to be exact! Not right for a Sunday! PSM had a 9am flight so we left about 7am, got to the airport about 730am, had time to check his bags and spend some one-on-one time together. Can’t wait to see him again on Thursday.

Back to the hotel,  ST and I go out to get some breakfast at a place that was recommended and shouldn’t have been. The food was ok, when we finally got it, enough said.

He headed to the airport,  I headed to my next hotel and DLP headed to pick me up. She was with her friend,  H. We went to The Green Door Tavern,  one of the oldest pubs with a speakeasy in the basement. It was a great atmosphere and the food was good, bonus. Good food,  conversation,  friends.

Then it was on to Walmart to get candy for the office for Halloween, a shopping spree!  Being silly and having a good time.

Back to the hotel, run some errands, hang out with DLP on the phone while we watched Monsters University and Bar Rescue, reminded me of when CKM and I used to do that with Hoarders. It was fun and a good memory.

Now, talking to you and thinking about drifting off to sleep.

Until tomorrow…

{October 22, 2016}   Yolk…Jack…Hawks…Cubs!

Who schedules appointments for Saturday mornings? Duh.

I got back to the hotel, the guys were up and ready to go, it’s brunch time! We went to Yolk, a nice place for brunch,  I was there with CKM. Food was ok, service left something to be desired.

Let’s go to a movie! The new Jack Reacher. I love Lee Childs and the character Jack Reacher.  If you’ve read his books, Tom Cruise is not Jack Reacher…if you can get past that,  a pretty good movie.

Back to the hotel for a minute,  then it’s off to the Blackhawks game! Standing Room seats,  not bad,  once you get a spot. We left shortly before the end, they were losing and then pulled it out last minute.

We headed to a restaurant/bar across from the hotel to watch the end of the Cubs game.  It was exciting! Congrats to the Cubs…making it to the pennant rave first time in 71 years and as they say 4 more games…they win…it will be the first time in 108 years!! I’m pulling for you Cubs!

A much earlier night tonight! Airport for the boys tomorrow.

What a great day! PSM and ST are here in Chicago with me, we’re going to have a good time.

PSM and I went into my office this morning for a few hours, went to lunch with DLP and then headed to the hotel. ST is in town and going to crash with us for the weekend.

We dropped our stuff and headed out, the boys wanted to go to the Apple store. After waiting about 20 minutes for someone to talk to us, we left empty handed.

We went to the Tmobile store to see my new friends, ha ha. I got the guys set up with VR Gear and someone for PSM to talk to about headphones and I needed a cover put on my phone.

Next it was off to Papa Ginos, a very cool place,  with graffiti on every…thing! And yes,  for the 2nd and last time I ate deep dish pizza. It wasn’t bad.

Then, to Atwood for Unicum! I was so excited that I found it in Chicago, it’s that battery-acid, Hungarian Liquor that PSM loved.

We introduced ST to Unicum and port, two of PSM’s favorites from our trip last year. Then it was other treats, I pretended to be a grown up and had an amaretto on the rocks.

On to Rockbottom Brewery for more shenanigans,  so much fun hanging with these guys.

It’s now about 230am, time for crashing! Lots to do tomorrow. Night!

{October 18, 2016}   Goodbye pop…hello Max

A new experience!

Got up,  had breakfast,  dad headed to the airport,  I headed to work. I know,  you’re jealous,  ha ha.

After work…

A few of us went to “Saved by the Max”. It’s a pop up diner in Chicago that is a replica of The Max from Saved by the Bell.

They designed it exactly like The Max, down to payphone on the wall. Every detail was seen to,  the booths,  the waitstaff shirts, the signs, music.

The menu was very clever, each dish named after a character or aspect of the show.

You pay in advance,  get an appetizer, entree,  side and dessert. [And before you ask,  nope,  not vegan friendly, but I made it work!] As our server said, we could dine and dash! We did!

There were TV screens showing different episodes, I watched a few episodes here and there,  but I wasn’t a die hard, I was a senior in high school when it came out. Now, MJW, who I was with, die hard…except for him,  it was in reruns…Oh brother! But it was fun sitting next to him,  very excited about the experience, talking about the different episodes that were showing.

DLP, KP, MJW had fun talking,  eating, enjoying the experience.

If you have the opportunity,  you should do this! I will tell you that you can stand on line with the hopes of getting a table, sometimes a 2 hour wait or make a reservation two-three months in advance,  which is what I did!

If you were a Saved by the Bell fan. This is the experience for you! Now,  remember,  this is a pop up diner,  they extended until the end of the year,  then it’s gone! Go!
