Peaches Prattlings

What? She just got here,  how can she be six? Where did the time go?

Today is a very special day! Miss A turned SIX! I imagine you guessed that from the title. Wow, six! And what a day we had for that very six year old.

Ready, here we go,  you might need a nap, we were busy!

The day started a like early, there was a bran muffin with raisins for a breakfast tease. Over breakfast I asked if she had any advice for MGS who turns six next week.

Then it was up to get dolled up! Black riding pants, pink tutu, white long sleeve top, sparkle t-shirt proclaiming “I was born to sparkle”! and cool boots.

She was put together and out the door we went.

First stop…horse riding, with a blinged-out helmet, a little extra being with a tiara on her helmet.  Do you see DIVA on the back? Oh yeah! She was fabulous!

Not to mention,  the entire staff sang happy birthday! Awesome!

After horses, off to brunch, remember, the muffin was the breakfast snack! We stopped at IHOP. The girl could out-eat me in a skinny minute! Eggs, pancakes with strawberries and whip cream and because it’s her birthday,  ice cream sundae, more strawberries and whipped cream.

And to top it all off, they sang happy birthday!

After breakfast head to the Blue Ridge Mountains to an apple orchard for a tractor show.  We got there just in time to see the pink tractor.  Then we went on a tractor tour around the orchard, very cool.  They grow 52 different varieties of apples!

Back inside to shop and maybe get a snack…maybe. ha ha! Butterscotch pudding, vanilla pudding, 1/3 of a banana, peach pie with ice cream.  Full yet?

We took a stroll in the meadow and by the lake,  very picturesque!

After a while, time to leave.  Heading back,  it was about dinner time, and we found a Cracker Barrel, chow time! Chicken-n-dumplings, coconut cream pie with whipped cream. Oh my!

More singing and silliness!

Then back home for bath and bed.  That sounds like a great idea!

Happy birthday Miss A, you wonderful, finny, silly, goofy,  bright,  loving little person. I’m so happy you’re in my life and I’m in yours.

Good…night!

{April 8, 2016}   Author jam session

Maybe jam session isn’t the right word, but it was cool.

You know how someone will pay a movie quote on Facebook and then someone else posts another quote from the same movie [I’ve seen it so many times with The Princess Bride]. Well,  I had this happen with authors, pretty cool!

I was on my flight this afternoon, waiting to take off and taking to PSM on the phone and a woman was passing by to her seat and I noticed the author she was reading.  I mouthed that I loved that author and she said I know!

Then I said another author and she mentioned another and back and forth. We must have mentioned at least eight authors each and we both knew the other persons. [The line was moving slowly].

I have to say…a very cool happening. A literary jam session,  there you go!

{April 7, 2016}   Happy birthday LaLa

Today we celebrate LaLa’s birthday.

LaLa came into our lives almost eleven years ago and she got her name because EJS couldn’t say her name,  so LaLa it was.

She is grandmother to her son’s kids, two girls on one side and two boys on the other side,  what are the odds? When EJS was born,  she became a grandmother to EJS and then MGS and interestingly…LaLa is the Chinese word for grandmother I found out from my friend JCT, who’s daughter calls her mom LaLa, perfect fit wouldn’t you say?

LaLa is a very busy woman,  for someone who is retired…she is an avid tennis player and fan,  haven’t seen her on Wii tennis yet,  I’m sure she’d be a champ! She loves to travel,  she and my dad have been on some amazing trips, it was cool comparing notes when they were in Budapest shortly before PSM and I. And all the traveling to see all her grandkids, six can keep ya hoppin’!

One of the things that’s fun to see is the post cards she sends,  everywhere she goes, no matter where, she sends all the grand kids post cards,  I know it’s a treat on both sides.

She’s a mother to her daughter-in-laws, a very special bond and like a second mother to her daughter-in-law’s sister. Very different relationships with each grand child,  proud in so many ways of what they accomplish and not above getting down on the ground to play and roll around with them.

I tease her sometimes, and let me just say,  she is a very good sport about it,  you have to be in this family! her socks match her shirt, it seemed like every time I saw her, but in the beginning that was mostly in the summer and she was in tennis gear, so, what did I do? I bought her socks when I traveled!

She’s always put together, which is more than I can say for myself first thing in the morning, well,  most of the day,  let’s be honest! EJS and MGS both love to play with her makeup and nail polish, something special they do together.

She is a very loving, caring family member and friend, remembering birthdays and anniversaries, just like my dad, she calls and sends cards, very close with her sisters,  like carbon copies of each other and close with their families.

She’s a great cook,  might be a little healthier than dad likes, but it’s a good thing. And her sangria is requested wherever she goes, not a bad thing to be known for.

When we, the family, met LaLa, there was an instant connection and she soon became family, which is a good thing because family vacations would have been really awkward! It’s fun to travel together and make plans,  sit around and do nothing, dinners, theater,  whatever we do,  it’s nice to do it as a family.

Happy birthday LaLa, here is hoping this birthday was better than the last, but not the best to come!

That’s a different story.

I don’t know why that is. I’ve watched football games, you know I’ve even been to professional football games, but I don’t follow what’s happening half the time, it happens. I have to live with it and I’m ok with it

Now,  football movies,  that’s another story.  Well, it’s the movie itself, but I can follow some of the game and I like watching the games,  I even root and get excited.  Go figure.

Some are silly,  funny,  others touching,  serious or sad.

The other day I watched Invincible,  I la la la love that movie! Tonight was Necessary Roughness. Who knows, maybe tomorrow it will be The Replacements.

There are some I still want to see, Any given Sunday and Draft Day,  among others.

Any recommendations?

They said more snow and they were right.  Pook.

I went to sleep and the snow was mostly melted and I woke up to…you guessed it…more snow! And at 10pm it’s still snowing. There have been a lot of memes about Mother Nature being bipolar and off her needs, sounds about right, right? Hmmm…what does tomorrow hold?

I think I’ve told you I’m ripping my movie collection and it’s been great,  remembering my babies and ice been watching them here and there, a nice break from Netflix. As I rip,  I want to watch everything!

Then, I got a phone call, the kind that I love! -“Hi Auntie J!”
-Hi MGS!
– “Guess what! I lost my tooth!”
-Awesome!
-“Thank you for my tooth fairy pillow! I really like it!”
– I’m so glad,  I loved making it.
-“When we go on vacation, will you bring things to teach me to sew?”
-I would love that! I’ll definitely bring sewing supplies with me.
-“Ok, I’m turning you back to mommy, bye”
-Bye, I love you
-I love you too
End of conversation.

Now I sit here, ripping and watching movies, cross stitching and loving on the furry beasts. Sounds good,  who wants to join me?

I was thoroughly refreshed after four hours of sleep, but would it be enough? I was spending the day with my sister’s family, you know, a marathon!

I happened to wake  up on my own at 8am, greeted the girls, had waffles made my ACS, he and MGS went off to gymnastics and EJS, GES and I went off to karate. After EJS went into class, my sister and I went over to Walgreens to pick up a prescription and then what do you do while you’re there? Why…walk around and look at deals, of course! And we found some good ones!

Including red noses for everyone! Do you know about Red Nose Day? This year it’s May 26th and every red nose product [red noses, bracelets, sun glasses, headbands with pompoms] purchased helps to fight kid poverty. “What’s poverty?” asks the nine year old when we picked her up and I gave her her very own red nose. So I explained.

I explained while we were on our way to Cradles to Crayons. This is a volunteering event that GES and EJS have participated in several times and I did once, I’m not sure if you remember me telling you about it. This is where people bring donations to the local high school and then the volunteers sort everything from clothes to books to toys. There are stations everywhere! We ended up in toys, counting and cleaning. Do you know how hard it is to count puzzle pieces when people ask you questions!

If an item is all in one piece, functioning and in good shape, it goes to donation, if it’s not the best, maybe it’s a coloring book that has one or two pages drawn on, or a pair of shoes with some scuff marks, it goes to Salvation Army. There were over one hundred kids, of all ages, and parents volunteering. It’s a very cool event and collect so many items that it helps so many kids.

What they do: Cradles to Crayons provides children from birth to age 12, living in low- income and homeless situations, with the essential items they need to thrive – at home, at school and at play. We supply these items free of charge by engaging and connecting communities that have with communities that need.  https://www.cradlestocrayons.org/

After volunteering, EJS chose to go to the bagel shop, so she GES and I got bagels, took them home and enjoyed them in our jammies and sweats on the couch! ACS and MGS got home from lunch, well, ACS came in, MGS was having a great nap in the car, which was safe, dry and warm in the garage, ACS even brought out a blanket for her. She hasn’t napped like that for a long time, she was probably out there another two hours after they got home.

There was playing and hanging out until it was time for dinner and we were meeting another family, well part of the family, at the local Japanese Steak House, Fuji for fun, food and fire! Then off to Orange Leaf for frozen yogurt and home for night-night.

As the girls were falling asleep, ACS and I channel surfed, it was quite interesting, a documentary on drugs, March Madness, the Final Four and Pawn Stars, yup, interesting. He went up, GES came down and the two sisters watched the movie Sisters. It was just as funny as I remembered and I may have laughed so hard I peed in my pants, that funny!

I told you…marathon! It’s been quite the day and now it’s time to drift off to sleep, I hope. My goal is to fall asleep before 4am, who’s with me! Pleasant dreams my friends!

Yup, that about covers it.

You know how when you’re not feeling well and you stay in bed and day or two and then you feel like you’re fine and ready to conquer the world? And you know when you do that you realize that you’re nuts and probably should have stayed in bed? Yup, that’s me. Go figure.

The Nyquil and Dayquil have been great, making me sleepy and stay in bed,  getting up every once in a while to stretch the legs, make tea,  you know how it goes.  So, today after being in bed almost two days, I figured, why not,  time to go out. Away I went.

I took the train to the movies, ulterior motive…the theater was near Chinatown,  guess what I’m going to do later!

I went to see ‘Hello,  My Name is Doris’, staring Sally Field. I must admit it felt a little weird not having popcorn, but I was saving room. The movie,  I loved it. It was charming and sweet and loveable and awkward and funny and well, A+!

Sally Field plays Doris, an older woman who just lost her mom,  they lived together on Staten Island and she commutes on the SI Ferry into her job in NYC.

Really enjoyed it,  a lot of fun,  good supporting cast.  I love seeing Tyne Daly as a foul mouthed, on occasion,  radical.

She meets the new art directorat her company and develops a crush. She’s sixty something [or as Naomi Judd once said, sexty] and her crush…let’s just say…isn’t.

She daydreams and fantasizes she isn’t ready to act her age, her clothes are fabulous, all mish mosh, mismatched and fabulous, cat-eye glasses,  saddle shoes. I totally see me in the future,  just without the fake hair. C’mon, friends who have met me,  you can see it,  can’t you?!

The tag line “She’s not ready to act her age”. Totally get it!

image

After the movie walked a few blocks to Chinatown, I knew exactly where I was going. When PSM and I went to Chinatown for New Years Eve we saw it and I know I would go back sometime.

My Thai Vegan Cafe, ‘Authentic Thai cuidine, unique vegan preparation’. Really good, I can’t remember the last time I had wonton soup,  yum! It’s nice to go somewhere that I don’t have to ask what the base is on the soup or if there’s anything I can’t eat in something. Wahoo!

Now,  I’m back in the apartment, eating a slice of vegan NY style cheesecake. Mmmm.

And…I’m eating it in bed because I am officially tired! I may have overdone it, but it was all worth it!! I may pass out before I finish eating!

{March 26, 2016}   MBFGW2

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. That was a mouthful!

Last night I took myself out for a date to see MBFGW2 and it was worth it! My seat was a bit too close, front row, it was the only seat left!  I like sitting in front,  not sure if I like sitting that close! Everyone was slightly skewed, that being said,  still fabulous!

The entire cast was back,  a few new characters, including John Stamos and Rita Wilson.

This movie was funny and touching and charming and had touches of the first movie. It opened with narrative by Tula, just like the first.

The family expanded a little,  it’s seventeen years later,  Tula and Ian have a seventeen year old daughter,  almost everyone is married with children, trying to get Paris married off or at least to get a Greek boyfriend. Yaya, or grandma has a bigger role and Ian gets a little jab in at Gus, pretty funny.

As you see in the previews Gus and Maria aren’t married because of a technicality and hilarity ensues in true My Big Fat Greek Wedding style. Nia Vandalos hit it out of the park yet again.

There are one liners, advice, both funny and scary, silliness, snogging, hiding, too many family members and Greek, Greek, Greek, of course.

The place was packed, I got one of the last available seats, that weren’t designated as handicapped. I didn’t realize it was Greek Independence Day, but it made sense when I heard that because the theater was full of “Hi Yaya!”

Go see this,  it was so worth it! The funny parts weren’t just in the previews. Opa!

{March 24, 2016}   Binge watching…pros and cons

I think I’ve told you…I love binge watching.

I actually prefer to watch the entire show after its gone off the air, but sometimes I just can’t wait.

I might acutely be addicted to binge watching.  No commercials…just power thru…one more episode…an entire season in the blink of an eye.

I was just doing that with NCIS tonight, I was towards the end of an episode, not knowing where I am in the season and I thought to myself as something huge happened, “I love binge watching,  I don’t have to wait for the next season…unless this is the end of the episodes and I have to wait until the next season is added.”

Grrrrr, what! Oh no! Now I have to wait! Nooooo! What am I going to do now?!

{March 23, 2016}   My apartment

You wanted to see where I reside, well, here you go!

So…I needed a place to live after I finished my project in Massachusetts last year. I wanted a place close to the airport, not too expensive [this is Boston after all] and takes pets, simple, right?

Not quite. It may sound unreasonable, but I wanted to find something about $1000 per month and I have to tell you, anything in that range would be a roommate situation. You can’t really move into a house with other people and ask them to watch your furry kids. So, alone it is. I found a place, it was perfect, well perfect in the way it was what I needed.

home-sweet-home-ceramic-tile-root-1paj4634_1470_1

Do you remember your first “POS” apartment? It was the worst, right? Falling apart, missing things, but you loved it. Well, this is not that, ha ha. I am almost 45 years old and I had that first POS apartment, I’ve owned a home and now I’m where?

Truth be told, it was a wee bit scary when I first saw it, well, scary to others, but I saw potential. The agent told me that a young girl, about college age saw the place and walked out.

It’s the basement apartment in a house in East Boston, I just found out the other day that makes me “an Eastie”, ok, I’ll take it. It reminds me of being called “a Slopie” when I was still in New York.

Being a basement apartment, you hear everything!  I would love to know what those people upstairs are doing all night and sometimes into the morning, on occasion, joining me in my insomnia.

When I first walked in, I was less than pleasantly surprised. The baseboard heaters were falling off, the walls were that lovely fake wood paneling, cabinets had to be from the 80s, if I was lucky, counter tops are fake marbling, glued down in some places, coming off in others and burned through in some places and yellow and sticky. Doors falling off the hinges, the ceiling in the bathroom was falling off, the dishwasher…1980s PINK people, PINK and sticky, on the outside. The range and refrigerator were fine, at least I hoped they were.

So…I told the agent that I would take the apartment if he fixed the issues and he would have three weeks to do it as I was going to be out of the country for that time as you may remember. He agreed.

Did he fix everything? Not exactly, but big things were done. Walls are now white, the baseboard heaters are re-attached, the ceiling in the bathroom is now in one piece, shower is re-tiled, new carpet in the front room and there is a new fridge and dishwasher.

The cabinets, not replaced and still falling apart and VERY icky, sticky, storm door can’t stay open, some windows don’t have screens, some of the existing screens are ripped. The only closet is the one under the stairs by the front door, there is a set of stairs to no one where and they added a giant shelf. Shelves or cubes would have been better, just saying.

First, I don’t know if you remember me telling you about my dad selling the summer house and me getting a lot of stuff to furnish the apartment, I didn’t have to buy much to furnish the apartment, which was great! My dad’s first set of dishes, a table and chair my mom used to use as a makeup table, a table from my grandmother’s house, among other things.

I took the doors off the cabinets and used Greased Lightning, bleach, whatever I could think of. When I sprayed the Greased Lightning, his yellow stuff just started to drip and drip and drip, it was kind of, well, grody! I put the doors in the shower to drip, drip, drip, didn’t help..they were all still sticky and gross. There was one door I couldn’t get off because they hinges were rusted solid. Even the drawer pulls were nasty. What did the people who lived in this place do?

image

Ok, I wasted enough time trying to clean the cabinets, so I decided to forget the cleaning, I’m going to paint. I went to Home Depot and picked out a nice blue, after asking the landlord for permission, of course.

I started with primer and moved on to paint. I painted inside and outside the cabinets, the roof of the cabinet, under the cabinet, pretty cool. I cleaned the drawer pulls as best I could and decided that I was not putting the doors back on and after they were dry and I loaded them up, I seconded my decision, I love the way it looks.

After I got the bed set up, I was no longer sleeping on the floor, have my fabulous new comforter set that my dad got me and I’ve made this space my own.

Do you love the pillow my mom made when she was pregnant with me?

image
She loved this doll, it was at the summer house.

The entrance to the shower looks bigger in the picture!

image
The area where my clothes are is ffffreezing!

image
I even put in a closet rod so my clothes stay a little warmer.

See, open cabinets, love it!

image
See…special artwork on my fridge!

See my Starbucks mugs on the windowsill?
Something to put my paintbrushes and colored pens and pencils in!

Found a place for my medals and race bibs.

The dishes look great!

So, that’s my place, now you’ve seen it and where I hang out when I’m off the road. What do you think?
