Please, somebody just shoot me and put me out of my misery!

Growing up, I didn’t have allergies other than smoke and when I move to Georgia I still didn’t have allergies. But they say if you don’t have allergies, when you move to Georgia just wait…you will, and it’s true.

Several years before I moved to Colorado, I began to develop allergies  and as soon as the Spring began, my eyes get wet and dry, my nose runs and I can’t stop sneezing.

Spring became unbearable, until I found a great homeopathic remedy and then it wasn’t so bad, I would take the pill every 2 hours, let it dissolve on my tongue just as the instructions said. The instructions said and “let one dissolve on your tongue every 2 hours” and every 2 hours I would start sneezing so I became quite enamored with this particular allergy relief.

One of the things I was so excited about moving to Colorado was the fact that my allergies would not affect me or that it would not be as bad, at least that’s what I was hoping, and let me tell you when I moved to Colorado in the first year I sneezed maybe 3 times… because I had to sneeze and I was fine with that.

I remember coming to Atlanta last April to visit and my allergies kicked in very quickly. When I got here on Thursday I wasn’t here even 12 hours and my allergies started to kick in. Since then I have not stopped sneezing, my eyes are itchy, I have rubbed my right eye to the point where I almost have a bruise, and I’m miserable. I can’t take over the counter allergy medications because they make me drowsy, & I haven’t had the opportunity to go down to Little Five Points to pick up the herbal remedy and I’m not going to have the opportunity before I leave on Monday morning.

That means for the next day I have to deal with this because Buffalo hasn’t welcomed Spring yet so my allergies do not affect me in Buffalo…whoever thought I would be excited to go back to Buffalo where it still cold and winteresq!

Are my friends and family in Atlanta worth all this?  You bet your sweet bippie!

To give you an idea of the pollen count,  http://m.ajc.com/news/news/atlanta-weather-pollen-count-hits-season-high/nkqTt/. Just look at Facebook and if you have friends from Georgia,  the are bound to be done funny memes.

I am done with my pity party…I am going to close my eyes and dream about rain.  Ha ha

Miss A is a bonafide FIVE year old!

Where did the time go? She was 9 months old when SDL brought her home, I got to meet her right off the plane, with her Momom and Popop, what an amazing time that was! I still remember the day SDL sent me a picture, “Hey Auntie G, want to see a picture of your niece?” I about fell on the floor and I was tearing up, what a doll baby! Nothing has changed!

I am in Atlanta this weekend because it’s Miss A’s birthday. I made a promise, like I did to MGS and EJS, that no matter what, I would be here for her birthday, either on her birthday or the birthday weekend, depending on work, but I’ll be here and yesterday I flew in and didn’t know I was going to get to see her before she went to bed and we hung out until almost midnight! What a party animal she is!

She is a fabulous, precocious, amazing five year old and every time I see her, I am amazed by something new! I love our one-on-one times, just SDL, Miss A and me, there is nothing like it! Tonight, we went to dinner and when we got home, I got to do bath time, brushing her teeth and getting her dressed for night night, this is a big deal!

Every time I see her, she has learned something new, is doing something else on her own or better than the last time, she just amazes me, did I already tell you that?

So, here I am, for the birthday weekend and I am loving every minute of it! I can’t wait to see what year number five holds!

This video cracks me up and you will be seeing it again in a few weeks when someone else turns five!

Happy Birthday Miss A! I love you very much! Auntie G XOXO

{April 9, 2015}   OMG, it’s H O T!

I have just arrived on the surface of the sun!

Ok, so not the surface of the sun, but close…I’m in Atlanta or, as affectionately know as Hotlanta! There is a reason it has this name, it was earned! It is almost midnight and it is 75 degrees…what?

I woke up in Buffalo, NY, where it was very cold and wet and rainy, I don’t know what the temperature was, but I was wearing my winter coat [long and down, that just sounds weird!]. As I was confirming what I was bringing with me to Atlanta, I thought, I don’t have a jacket, I know I won’t need my giant winter coat when I get there, but, I don’t have a jacket, well, duh…I landed about 9pm and it was still 80 degrees, think I’ll need a jacket?

The funny thing was when I was standing at the carousel waiting for my luggage, there was a woman next to me waiting for hers, we exchanged where we were coming from and it was obvious the temperature difference in our locations. I was wearing jeans, knee-hi suede boots and a long sleeve pullover. She was wearing a light flowy shirt, leggings and ballet flats, not exactly Buffalo attire, she was coming from Palm Beach, Florida.

I’m glad I remembered to pack some t-shirts so I won’t sweat my tush off this weekend! Then it’s back to the frigid North to Buffalo where I will need that coat on Monday, boo. I wanted warmer weather, like everyone else, but I wanted to ease into it, but that’s not the way things work here in hot sunny Atlanta!

I am going to appreciate what I have, thank you very much. Take the warm and sun with me next week when I shuffle back to Buffalo.

{April 8, 2015}   Ooh, a treat!

Tomorrow, something wonderful is happening.

I get to sleep in! My first class isn’t until 9am, so I get to sleep until 7:30, oh my!

Now, you may be saying, 7:30, that’s not that late, but when you get up every day by 5:30am, oh boy, let me tell you my friends, sleeping until 7:30 is a dream! I am going to get up after the sun, what?

I will leave the hotel tomorrow and look at the sky and wonder what that big bright golden ball in the sky is, a new experience…I can’t wait!

Gotta go to sleep now so I can sleep in!

{April 7, 2015}   Happy Birthday LaLa

Today is LaLa’s birthday.

As you know [or not know because you’re new to my site], LaLa is my dad’s main squeeze and today is her birthday. She and my dad have been dating for almost ten years and shortly after they starting dating, she quickly became a part of our family. A very important part, not only as a partner for my dad, but a grandmother to my nieces, EJS and MGS, and that means a great deal to me and my family.

When we met LaLa, she had two granddaughters, B&A, the next year, GES had EJS, three years later she had MGS, bringing the number to four, that’s a lot of girls! Then her son, MD met TBD and they had their first son, B and a few months ago, their second son C, in case you weren’t keeping up, that’s six grandchildren, how lucky is she! All those loves to spend time with and spoil.

Her relationship is special with each one. She loves to send post cards to each grandchild, with MGS, she loves to play mani-pedi, with EJS, she loved to do LaLa’s makeup when she was younger. She loves to cook and bake with the children, get on the floor and play, she has a great deal of energy and doesn’t seem to be stopping any time soon.

You know how sometimes you’re not sure what to buy for someone? Well, with LaLa, it’s easy…LaLa is ga-ga about Vera Bradley.

We have bought her different things over the years that she has loved, but a sure bet is anything Vera Bradley, you can’t go wrong with anything from her collection. They come out with new patterns every few months, then retire things. Whenever we are out and find stuff we think she would like, we buy it, how could we not! Especially if it’s a retired pattern, you can’t go wrong! I like the fact that she doesn’t care [or at least doesn’t say she cares] about what the pattern is, she loves it.

This year, we gave her a pair of pajamas and a new purse, it was a hit! Looking forward to the fashion show next time we’re together!

Now, I know LaLa is not the only Vera Bradley fan out there, I have many friends who are. But…have you ever seen a Vera Bradley cake? I know you won’t be surprised, but check out the link for some great pictures!

In conclusion…Happy Birthday LaLa! We hope today was as great a day as you are! We love you!

{April 6, 2015}   Annoyed

I’ve had so many good days, today was pretty good, just a few things annoyed me.

The day started fine, got up a few minutes early, a little because I was waking up and a little because ACS ran down the stairs getting ready to go to work.

Last night I did something I’ve never done before, I packed for a trip almost three weeks away, a little surreal, but I’m not going to be home very long between trips and next weekend I’m going to be in Atlanta, so I won’t have much time when I get back to Boston to pack.

This morning, I was looking at my bags and was wondering if I had enough britches, I decided to pack half in my bag for work and half in my other bag, sounds good, I can do laundry over the weekend and I always over-pack my britches, and I’m, ok with that, I’d rather over-pack than not have enough.

Dad is up and looks outside and says “Look, it’s Santa Clause!” Yup, my driver looked a little like Santa Clause, I found out a lot about him, he’s married 25 years, has a 21 and 18 years old, never been on a jet plane and has been clean for 26 years.

Then he told us a good joke, “What do you call Santa’s elves?” “Santa’s subortanelves!” ha ha!

I get to the airport, can’t change my seat, I tried over and over yesterday, then no other seats available, back of the plane I go. I miss my Delta, I already have my confirmation of my first class upgrade for Thursday. I had a fabulous veggie omelet, they used my cheese, so it was rich and creamy, I loved it! I had my own matzoh, so I was set.

I stopped at Wegman’s, picked up supplies for the week, lots of good stuff, then I get to the hotel, I’m on the ‘women’s floor’, ‘the what?’ They have little extras for women, like robes, slippers, love it. Then I start unpacking and guess what…NO BRITCHES! I had packed them all in the other bag! WHAT?

Great…so, I know where I am going after class…Victoria’s Secret for some new britches. now, don’t get me wrong, I heart Victoria’s Secret, even though she doesn’t have many secrets left…but I just bought new britches two weeks ago…grr

I left for the hospital, reviewed material with another trainer, we had plenty of time, no one was registered for the class, it was very productive.

Then I was heading to the mall and stopped at Walmart for one thing, ended up buying something else, go figure…As I was at the register attempting to pay, my card was declined, what? It happened again, not happy, so I used another credit card, thinking I would reach out to my bank later to see what was going on.

After I left the store, I got a call from the bank to confirm I had made the purchase, I proceeded to give the representative what-for, apologizing for being harsh, but I was ticked off, as you can imagine. A note is being made to my file, hmm…let’s see what happens next time.

After that, my trip to VS was not as much fun as it could have been, but I did have fun picking out birthday presents for Miss A, so that helped. I got back to the hotel, got into comfy clothes, had some dinner, talked to PSM, played with my new purchase and now I’m talking to you, Bad vibes are gone, I’m getting happy.

I need this…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2U-rBZREQMw

In the erectile dysfunction ads, what’s with the bathtubs?

What does an ED Salesperson say when you ask “How’s business?”  “Business is up” or “Business is on the rise”, yuk yuk yuk, thanks GES, loved it!

I get that they need to advertise, doesn’t everything need to be advertised, so sayeth the advertising community. And I know the tag line is something along the lines of ‘you never know when the moment will hit’ so therefore, you need to take a pill. I got that part.

What I still don’t get is why there is a set of bathtubs just randomly sitting there…on the beach, a cliff, a field..as if some random couple is going to be out and see the bathtubs sitting there in the middle of wherever and decide…ooh, let’s take a pill and sit in a random bathtub! Naked…

Now, I’ll give you that if I saw a pair of bathtubs sitting out somewhere, I would absolutely sit in them, but not naked and not just before I want to do, well, stuff.

That’s it, my thoughts on the random bathtubs.

What a day, you may want to sit down for this, get a cup of coffee, it was a crazy day!

The day started at a reasonable hour, about 8:15am, this was after I woke up about 7am and said “no way, good night!” and went back to sleep!

When I got up, it was time for breakfast, matzoh brei was on the menu, Y U M! One of my favorite breakfasts and I think a favorite of many people who celebrate Passover, it’s basically matzoh fried with egg [or scrambled eggs with matzoh in it]. VERY simple recipe, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matzah_brei. You can eat it as is, you can eat it with salt, or something sweet, I like it with sugar and jam or preserves, I found out today, people like it with syrup, your choice. The funny thing about matzoh brei is that people who love it say they’d eat it throughout the year, but don’t, it’s not something you think about or always have a box of matzoh just hanging around waiting for you to want to make matzoh brei!

After breakfast it was time to finish the prep for EJS’ birthday party…I don’t know if you remember me telling you that she was sick on her birthday a few weeks ago and had to postpone the party, well today was the day. EJS is a huge fan of science and experiments, so for her birthday, she wanted to have a science party, how cool is that!

She has been fascinated with science and experiments for a long time and I’ve done some experiments with her and her friends, they all love it! She even wore the lab coat and protective goggles I got her for Chanukah!

So…the prep…we had already set out the pans with glass jars and glitter, but this morning, we had to prep a whole bunch of dixie cups with the ingredients for the experiments. We had baking soda, soap, vinegar, raisins and water, they were doing three different experiments, Dancing Raisins, Tornado and a Volcano.

The kids all started arriving about 11, they watched a video about 3D printing and then ACS gave a demonstration, very cool. Next they watched a video about the first experiment, then gathered in the dining room to try it. They followed the same pattern for the next two experiments, they had a blast!

After the experiments, it was time for lunch! Matzoh pizza it is! I told you we can get creative when the need arises! Then dessert and singing, soon after, it was time for everyone to leave.

But wait, there’s more! About an hour after everyone left, EJS went to a birthday party for someone else and two hours later, came back with two friends for a play date and during that time, MGS had a friend from across the street came to play with her, his dad was here too.

During this time, we finished cleaning up from the party, I did some organizing, which I love [cabinets, drawers], then it was time to get dressed, PSM was coming to take me to his second night Seder.

I think I told you last night that some people will do a second night Seder, well, I was invited to one tonight and as we weren’t hosting a second night, I went. Their Seder was a little more in depth, especially since there weren’t any teeny tiny tots running around. There was singing and prayers and food, oh at the food!

The awesome thing was that his aunt and uncle keep kosher, so I couldn’t even bring something if I wanted to, so we brought dried fruit for dessert, now you might be saying, what’s so awesome about that? I’ll tell you…his aunt made me a special meal that was 100% vegan, it was great! I appreciated it so very much.

The family is silly and funny and every engaging and welcoming and warm. I was comfortable and really enjoyed myself…I even got an invite for next year! So flattered!

Now, I just need to remember to send them a thank you!

Let’s just say it was a very long day. I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I had taking them and participating!

{April 3, 2015}   A Zissen Pesach

A sweet Passover to you.

Now, I know I have talked about Passover with you before, but that was a year ago and I don’t remember what I said, so I’m going to tell you again, and you’re going to like it. [so bossy!]

Tonight was the first night of Pesach, or Passover, and it is the first of eight nights. Some families will celebrate the first an second night and the last or last two nights. In my family, traditionally, we celebrated the first night. A few years ago, my sister started hosting first and second night because there were so many families to celebrate and some would do first night with us, second with their families and vice versa, it’s been a great tradition was started and enjoyed.

Now, growing up, the Passover Seder would take us a few hours, because of all the food, talking and fun. Today, because we have so many wee tots, and I mean soooo many, the Seder takes about thirty minutes, tops, because the little ones can’t really sit still that long and it’s ok, we do the important stuff and more importantly, we are all together.

The Passover Seder is the telling of the story of the exodus of the Jews from Egypt and Pharaoh’s evil reign. It includes the killing of the first born, Moses’ mother putting him in a basket and sending him down river, his sister saying she would watch over him, Moses being found and brought up in the palace and eventually leading his people out of the land of Egypt. There is the parting of the Red Sea, the ten plagues, from boils, to locusts, to the killing of the first born, pretty harsh, I know.

There is a saying “Jews and Catholics are the same, just different foods” and that is pretty true, we like to tell stories through food and there is so much symbolism in the food we eat at different holidays. I don’t know if you’ve heard of matzoh, but it’s unleavened bread that we eat for the eight days and the reason is that when the Jews fled Egypt, they didn’t get a chance to bake their breads in the oven so they baked it on flat rock and matzoh was born, therefore, we do not eat anything that rises, nothing containing flour, things like that.

Matzoh, or the idea of eating matzoh, is entertaining at first, a piece with butter or margarine, I prefer egg matzoh, it’s a little sweeter, then you are coming up with new and exciting ways to eat matzoh, for example, tomorrow is EJS’ birthday party, they are having matzoh pizzas, creative, huh?

We dip our greens in salt water to symbolize our tears, we eat matzoh with maror, or horseradish, to symbolize the harshness and bitterness of being slaves, we make a sandwich with matzoh and charoset, which is a sweet brown mixture, a lot of times made with apples, cinnamon and sweet wine, to symbolize the mortar that held the bricks together that formed the pyramids. See how much symbolism there is!

And that was just the beginning! The Seder plate holds all the symbolic items that we will partake in and talk about, imperative to the Seder. My sister and I crack ourselves up because every year, we try to remember everything that’s on the Seder plate, it’s right there in Hebrew and English and we still can’t figure it out! We write it down, take pictures, doesn’t matter! We are very smart women, but sometimes…forget about it!

We go through the Seder, reading, holding up foods, eating at particular times. Now, the food I’ve talked about is just a touch of what is served, and those are things that are symbolic! Then there is the spread of food that we eat because it’s tradition! The turkey, matzoh apple kuegel, carrot soufflé, brisket, chicken and matzoh ball soup. Hungry?

But wait, there’s more! There’s dessert! Candies special for Passover and so much more!

The Seder is participatory, everyone reads something and then there are the Four Questions, those are supposed to be asked by the youngest at the Seder, the kids take turns asking them, unless the youngest has practiced them in Hebrew, then it’s all eyes on them! After the four questions, we sing, Mah Nishtana HaLeila HaZeh, which means “Why is this night different from all other nights?”

Then there is the hunting for the afikomen, or matzoh. Someone, traditionally my dad, will hide half of a piece of matzoh somewhere and all the kids will hunt for it, there doesn’t seem to be an age limit on the kids who can hunt for the afikomen, yours truly still hunts every once in a while. You would too if there was a cash prize to the winner! The hiding and searching creates interest , aside from the cash, and the kids of all ages love it and get in on the action “you’re getting warmer” “brrr, so cold”! When the piece is found, you join the two pieces together to symbolize the reunification.

If all that didn’t get you, how about the four glasses of wine? There are different times during the Seder that you drink a glass of wine and then there is the glass of wine for Elijah, always have a place for him at the table, as well as anyone who is hungry could come and sit and eat with us, the Seder is rich with symbolism and tradition.

Now, I think you can probably imagine why it takes us so long to get through the Passover Seder. Maybe next year you will join us and get to experience it for yourself, you are most welcome.

Tomorrow begins the holiday and festivities of Passover, or Pesach in Hebrew and one of my favorite traditions is cooking with my sister.

When we were kids mom would go to her mom’s to cook for a few days before and on the dad would bring us later to participate in the Seder and eat and eat and eat. As tomorrow is the first night, I will go into more details about the holiday and the food and the traditions, but today, I just want to tell you about my favorite tradition, cooking with family.

So, as I said, when we were kids, mom and grandma would do the majority of the cooking, then as we got older, first I would go and help, then when GES was a little older and could help, she joined us. What an amazing experience it was, the four of us cooking together in my grandmother’s kitchen.

Now, let me tell you, there was food and food and food, apparently we were cooking for an army and didn’t realize it! There could be 30 people at grandma’s house and there was still food left over! As my grandma got older, the celebration moved to our house and my mom, sister and I took over the bulk of the cooking, grandma was still responsible for certain things, very important things, like making her home made applesauce, oh my!

Then the year after my mom passed, GES and I took over, we didn’t have a huge crowd like we did when we were kids, but we made a fabulous meal and I know my mom would have been very proud of us, I know dad was, he told us, made us teary eyed, but it felt great. Ever since then, it’s been the two of us cooking for the sedar together. The year EJS was born was the year we established Passover in Boston and it’s been there ever since. Tomorrow I might tell you about the very expensive champagne turkey that year!

GES and I have been making our mom’s and grandma’s recipes for the Passover Seder since we were kids, why mess with perfection. We’ve added some things, taken some things away, maybe even tweaked a recipe or two here and there, but to be honest, not much has changed and we still use the prayer books and some of the serving pieces from when we were kids.

Every so often, we have help with cooking the meal, this year, GES “farmed” out the responsibility for some of the foods, but we still do the main dishes and we love doing it, no matter how tired we get, being on our feet for hours, after working a full day and then cooking. I got in about 7, they got back from dinner and we dove right in! She had already made a few things today, to save time, because tomorrow will be crazy busy and still more to cook and reheat, we have 24 people coming!

We talked, caught up and reminisced, what worked, what didn’t work, “didn’t we say the same thing last year?” “We need to write this stuff down so we don’t forget next year!”  Yeah, we said that last year! Like I said, no matter how tired we get being on our feet all day, this is something we love to do together, we measure, spoon out, spoon in, taste test, kibbitz, a Yiddish word for chatting or ‘shooting the…’ I think it brings us closer and it feels like we’re kids again and mom is going to walk into the kitchen at any moment and join in with the cooking.

We even followed in mom’s footsteps and put the food that wouldn’t fit in the fridge on the porch, this year, we have actual snow and ice to keep things cool!
image

I may not come home for all the holidays, but I always made sure, no matter what, I would always be home with my family at Passover and I would always cook the meal with my sister and I do not foresee that ever changing. I look forward to being much older and enjoying her girls preparing the Passover feast!
