What a day.

Today we celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. His Birthday is January 15th and we celebrate on the third Monday of January.

Martin Luther King Jr was an American Baptist minister and activist who was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs.

There are many ways that we honor Dr. King in the United States. Different groups honor him in different ways, lectures, celebrities, it’s a federal holiday, schools are closed, some companies give their employees the day off, as mine did.

Since I knew I would have been in Chicago today, DLP and I decided to go to the movies and it seems fitting that we saw Hidden Figures.

Hidden Figures is a movie based on a true story. A team of African-American women provide NASA with important mathematical data needed to launch the program’s first successful space missions.

It was an amazing and powerful story. The three main characters are smart, clever, personable women you can’t help but cheer for, want to succeed and wish you had even a fraction of their brains.

The movie took place during a difficult time in history for people of color. It was interesting and difficult to watch at times, empowering, happy, sad, frustrating, exciting, so many emotions. There were tears, anger, joy and those were the feelings of the audience.

It was an amazing and inspiring movie, I walked out wanting to be a human computer! Go see it!

So many emotions.

I can’t believe it’s been a year, but January 15, 2016 is when PSM got on a plane very early in the morning in Boston to move to Hawaii. This morning, 7am, he kissed me goodbye and headed to the airport to go home to Hawaii.

The nice thing this time, well for me, is that PSM took a taxi and I stayed in bed and went back to sleep,  ahhh…he’s home, safe and sound as we speak and I’ll see him in two weeks for our 2 year anniversary! I don’t know if you remember that I surprised him last year, it was perfect! This time, he knows I’m coming, but he’s got a surprise planned for me!

After I got up leisurely, had breakfast, hung out and then headed to the movie theater nearby to see the 65th anniversary of Singin’ in the Rain on the big screen. The theater was full, very few empty seats, even quite a few kids.

The opening  credits started to roll and it was on! I will easy, a little bittersweetto see Debbie Reynolds on the big screen after just losing her so soon from our lives. I just sat back, literally…in the recliner, and reveled in Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Conner, singing and dancing on the big screen.

I’ve watched this movie at least 50 times or more, but on a TV, there is nothing like seeing it in the theatre on a big screen.  That’s why I go as often as possible when they re-release a movie or a one time showing on the big screen, something that brings back my childhood or gives me a new experience.

It’s on the big screen today and Wednesday, January 18th across the country, go find a theater, at fandango.com, and  fun! Here’s the full list of what’s going to be on the big screen, presented by TCM, http://www.playbill.com

{January 15, 2017}   A day at the museum

A night at the museum would have fun collection, just to say it, I love that movie!

We took our time getting up, getting breakfast, headed out into Chicago. We decided to go to the Art Institute of Chicago.on the way, we stopped at the theater showing Hamilton to see if we could score some tickets,  oh well, it wasn’t meant to be.

We went to the Art Institute and enjoyed sharing the time, we love going to museums and view, discuss, appreciate and question the art we see together. We have different tastes in some areas and the same in others.

After a few hours we left in search of lunch, then it was another stroll around the city and then, football! Cause I’m awesome…the Falcons were playing Seattle, congrats to Falcons fans and congrats to Patriots fans for beating Hoston. Happy PSM.

A great day to spend together.

{January 14, 2017}   Together again

I’ve got my baby back! I just love saying that…mostly because now you’re singing it!

This past week, PSM was in St Louis for work and since he was so close, we decided to get together. He extend his time in St Louis and I booked a flight to see him.

Well, Mother Nature had other plans and sent a big ice storm his way so…rebook to Chicago for Friday and I got a hotel for the weekend and here he is!

I went into the office because I knew he would be working most of the day and I was right. About 5pm, he got off his call and then rang me as I was packing up my bag to leave.

It’s nice being together, ahh….we went to one of my favorite vegan restaurants, his idea, so very sweet of him,  had a good dinner, then walked around Chicago. Eventually ended up back at the hotel to relax and eventually crash.

It’s been a great evening, talking, laughing, catching up, being silly,  just right.

{January 11, 2017}   Insomnia, work, nap and dinner

I am sleepy, Wahoo! And now let me tell you why I’m excited…

Last night I had a bad case of insomnia. Now, you know I sleep only about 3-4 hours a night. About once a month I’ll catch up sleeping for 8-10, maybe 12 hours. Every once in a while I get a case of insomnia. At the moment,  I have been awake since 630am Tuesday.

I wanted to sleep last night, I really did,  I just couldn’t. It was 11pm, then 1am, 3am and then next thing I knew, 530am, I’m not going to sleep at this point, pook.

I got up, showered, dressed and went to get breakfast and lunch for later, requested an Uber and off to the training site. I had good sessions, I was energized and on, surprisingly. I will say that by the last session, I was dragging a little.

In the Uber back to the hotel, I feel asleep! I may have been mid discussion with the driver! Oh my! I had 2 calls, closed my eyes for about 15 minutes, then up and out to meet LJ and DLP for dinner at Kitchen 17 for a deep dish vegan pizza! We had such a good time chatting, eating, catching up and laughing.

Back to the hotel to pack, talk to you and pass out! I’m tired, I should be able to sleep, wahoo!

{January 11, 2017}   The passwords are clean!

Success!

I use an app to store my passwords and credit cards, I’m sure like a lot of you. The one I use is Dashlane and I really like it. If I use the Dashlane browser, it will populate the information with a touch of an icon, very simple. The other thing it will do is create a password for me or tell me if the one I’m using is safe or ice used the same one too many times.

Well, I have access to a lot of different sites, some I use all the time and some here and there. Regardless, it stores every password.

I’ve been meaning to clean it up for a long time, there are multiples in there, I have 3 different yahoo email addresses, things like that and I need to keep them straight. There were sites in there I haven’t used in years, like dating sites, don’t need those anymore, job search sites, nope. You get the idea.

I’ve been going in there here and there to clean it up and tonight I was updating something and said ‘enough is enough’ and I cleaned up the list. I attempted to log into every site, tested passwords, deleted sites, updated site names and web addresses, cleaned it up. I still have way too many logins,  but at least it’s all valid.

Wahoo! Success!

Happy birthday to my b-i-l, ACS!

{January 8, 2017}   Not That Jewish

A fabulous show!

Today the snow had melted enough and the roads were plowed and it had stopped snowing, which helped, since we had theater tickets.

We were going to see “Not That Jewish”. This is a one woman show by Monica Piper. It’s autobiographical, funny, charming, thoughtful, touching, sad, silly, clever and real.

We learn about Monica from the time she was six and someone said “you’re not that Jewish” and her questions, ‘what does that mean?  What is not that Jewish?’

We join her with family, aunts, uncles, mom, dad, grans, marriage, motherhood, adoption, teaching, comedy, animation, TV, health issues, highs, lows, joy, sadness, love and loss.

What is it to be Jewish, having spirit, humour, a Jewish heart, all with some Yiddish thrown in for good measure.

The fabulous thing about the show is that if you were raised in a Jewish home, didn’t have a Jewish upbringing or you’re not even part of a tribe, you can understand and appreciate the humor and insights.

It was a good time, 90 minutes of fun and joy, it made me think about when my grandma called me a gut klepik broyt, pronounced shticky broight..  [a good sticky bread, yeah, that makes sense!]…just listen to me just kvelling over this show! Two thumbs up!

Thanks pop, it was fabulous!

{January 7, 2017}   It’s a winter wonderland

It’s snowing!

When I arrived on Thursday night/Friday morning, it was snowing. When I got to my dad’s, at least 3 or 4 inches on the cars. You might remember this was about 3am. When we woke up a few hours later, no snow…

This morning when we got up, that was a different story. It was snowing and didn’t look like it was going to let up anytime soon. They said to expect 1-3 inches. Well…by 2pn, it was still going and going and going. Let’s just say, our plans to  venture out quickly became a day to stay in, male popcorn, order take-out and binge watch Netflix.

Turned out to be the perfect day, spending time with family, good food and relaxing.

Here are some pics for my friends who are missing the snow. Enjoy!

Yup, you guessed it, this is a slightly annoyed post, hopefully there will be a happy ending.

Left work in time, shared an Uber with a coworker, it was nice chatting with him, we don’t usually have that much time to chat.

Bag drop…check, security…check, get to the gate…check, wait at the gate…check, wait at the gate,  wait at the gate, wait at the gate,  huh?

Flight was supposed to leave at 451pm, when I checked my bag in, I was told it would be delayed until 501pm, ok…I texted the family at 518pm that I was on the plane. If…we had taken off on time, we would have landed on time and I would have made my connection. I have a feeling you know what’s coming next…we waited and waited and waited and then they said they needed to de-ice, what? I also just found out that when they decide to de-ice that means that it’s now the weather’s fault and no one is responsible for providing hotels or rental cars.  Nice…

We landed and I could see my next plane from my window, it was the next gate. That would have been great if we landed on time…no notification on my phone, app, email, nothing…then we sit on the tarmac for a bit, then mosey to the gate and wait some more…joy. We landed or pulled into the gate I still had maybe 15 minutes,  yeah right.

Finally get off the plane and watch my next flight take off. I call my travel company and apparently, I the airline had rebooked me, 7am tomorrow morning, would have been nice to be told…and as much as first class 7am would be nice, I want to go home, spend the night in my childhood bed…I asked if they could get me on any flight to NYC, spending the weekend with my dad, awe.

They got me on a flight leaving about 10pm, great. I go to get something to eat. I take my time, talk to the guy next to me who was on my flight and he couldn’t get another flight out and his wife is driving two hours to pick him up, then driving two hours back, glad I’m not going to be in that car! Ha ha.

I get to my gate and realize, duh…I never asked about my bag! The gate agent was fabulous, he got my bag, which was still going to Newark tomorrow morning, huh? It’s now going to be on my flight,  fingers crossed.

We now sit waiting for the crew, who just landed at the other end of the airport..and if you know DTW, you know it’s not a short walk, especially after having to de-plane everyone…think we’ll get out on time?  It’s 944pm, we were supposed to leave at 955pm..hmm…

I have to say…and I know there are others who will back me up…Thursdays out of O’Hare…yuck!

So…here I am waiting, with everyone else, will there be a happy ending? Fingers crossed!

{January 4, 2017}   I am such a kid!

I know, I know, you’re sitting going, “well, duh”! [and I know it should be saying instead of going]

Now I’ll tell you why. Well, there are many reasons, but tonight in inspired as I sit here watching Star Trek Into Darkness. It’s on TV and I came in 3/4 thru and and as soon as it’s over, I know I’m going to turn it on my iPad to watch it all the way thru, maybe even start with Star Trek.

But what makes me such a kid, I have seen these movies at least 20 times, minimum, same with Star Wars IV, V & VI. I have seen them so many times and I could probably recite them, but I still get nervous, excited, anxious, tense, “I get goose pimply, like some great big pimply goose!” [I’ll be really impressed if I know what that line is from! ]

I sit on the edge of my seat, enraptured …will he make it? Can Spock do it? Did Kirk just die?! Will Uhura get to Spock in time? Can Bones save them? Will Scott you come back?  When will he say “My name…is Kahn? Will Luke be able to hit the spot on the Death Star? Where’s that sound? I didn’t want you to think I’d forgotten!

So many questions I already know the answers to, but I still sit there hoping. Just so you know, it’s not just with sci-fi, just inspired at the moment.

Such a kid!
