{February 12, 2015}   Luke Skywalker got old!

And kind of bloated. Sorry, I know that’s rude, but that’s the truth.

Let me start off by saying, I heart Luke Skywalker. I know he was in a lot of stuff before Star Wars, but that is when I really first noticed Mark Hamill, yes, that is his real name, for those of you who did not realize. Now, don’t get me wrong, I loved Han Solo, but I was 6 and my heart went pitter pat for Luke.

Mark Hamill has been in a multitude [did you like that, multitude? That’s a six dollar word for you SAT Prep Course survivors] of tv shows and movies, and I know I saw quite a few of them, but when I saw Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, it hit me, Luke Skywalker got old.

And then, when I watched an episode of Criminal Minds and he was on it and he was…bloated. It happens, people age and bodies change, and boy had he. It wasn’t horrible, but when you just watched Star Wars two weeks ago and looked at the younger version, it’s well…unsettling.

That’s all, I still heart Luke Skywalker, no matter what. sigh…

{February 11, 2015}   My brother-in-law

Is pretty great.

I haven’t talked much about my b-I-l, that’s brother-in-law for those not in the know. I know I’ve mentioned him in posts, ACS, but I haven’t told you much about him and what he means to my family.

I remember when my sister first brought him home, I wasn’t sure about him, but come on, I’m the big sister and no one is ever good enough for my baby sister. We happen to be the same age, well, for a few months we are, born the same year, he’s January and I’m September, so same age for a few months, but I still call him my baby brother, he’s married to my baby sister, see how my logic works?

I have to tell you, he is a great father. He’s loving and silly with them and firm when he needs to be, he loves them and they adore him, you can see it on their faces and hear it in their voices.

When it comes to my sister, there is no one better to take care of her, after me and our dad, of course, wink wink, but he has been amazing, especially over the last year and a half. He went to every single doctors appointment, treatment, procedure, you name it, he was there, sitting by her side when he could and keeping the rest of us informed, a very important job.

He is a generous person and very popular with his friends, many of them from childhood. The joke is that everyone we meet went to camp with him, I always ask, but the reality, he lives in the town he grew up in and a lot of the people we meet, he went to camp with. He is someone who works hard and people know they can depend on.

The reason I am telling you all of this is, yesterday, he did something really nice, which he does, but it helped me out a lot. I had that appointment with the GI in the morning and it had been snowing and when I came outside, he had cleared off his car so I could take it. Even clearing it off before he left for work, moving the other car so I could get out and then he went back for MGS so they could leave for school and work.

He helps a lot of people and they appreciate it and yesterday, for me…props to him.

No flowers, boo.

Today I had a new experience, a first for me. A little background…I was diagnosed with Severe Gastritis somewhere between 21 and 23, it’s been a while. The reason I was diagnosed is that for a long time, every time I ate, I was nauseous and/or would throw up, so my mom took me to a GI, or Gastroenterologist.

I had my first endoscopy at that time, it turns out I had eaten a hole in the lining of my stomach from taking too many Advil, due to allergies, fun, I know, right! I even have the pictures, wanna see? So, the doctor put me on Tagamet, before it was over the counter, and a strict list of things I couldn’t eat. Want to be jealous? Fried food, spicy food, citric acid, caffeine, colored soda, chocolate, apple skins, potato skins and if I eat nuts, I have to chew them really well. I used to eat Tums like they were candy, I got to like the tropical kind.

About the same time, I was diagnosed with Lactose Intolerance, which was wonderful understanding why I would get sick from a sip of milk. For years I took Lactaid pills, tried to avoid a lot of dairy products, but still ate them. Let me tell you, that first sip of Lactaid milk, after years of not drinking milk…like manna from the gods! Happy me!

Eventually I couldn’t even have Lactaid Milk, so it was soy milk, then I developed an allergy to soy milk, really? Oh my goodness, my tongue would itch so bad, I’d scratch it with a fork! So, no more soy milk and limit my soy product intake, to be on the safe side. Almond, Rice and Coconut milk it is! I slowly started to cut some more dairy out, but I couldn’t stay completely away. Finally, in August, I said enough is enough and cut out dairy completely, boo hoo, I miss cheese! I miss pizza! I know, there are substitutes, but they are just not the same, but it’s what had to be done. I feel a little better, but not completely.

Ok, fast forward to today. I gave up dairy last year and I really try to avoid all the things I’m not supposed to have, but I still live with nausea, 24/7, some days worse than other, some better, but it doesn’t seem to go away.

I have a new PCP, primary care physician and when I told her about the nausea, she prescribed Prilosec, after a few weeks, I called to ask how long it was supposed to take before the nausea goes away. She told me to stop taking it and would I be interested in seeing a GI. Yes, please.

I was able to get an appointment and today was the day, so away I went…in the snow. She was very nice and a few times confused when I told her some of the things that bothered me, but had a plan. The second was some blood work, the third and fourth are some tests, very boring as the doctor said, the first is tomorrow, I will let you know.

Yes, I know I went out of order because here is the first thing ties back into why we are here today. She did a somewhat physical exam, I stripped down to my skivvies and got to wear a lovely hospital gown, at least this one has ties in the front!

She listened to my heart and lungs, she checked my neck, she tapped on my belly to see if there was any pain and lastly…she had me roll onto my side, look out the window and ooh, you’re going to put your finger where?

No, it wasn’t a surprise, she told me what was coming next, but it’s not the most pleasant of experiences, so it helps to joke about it, wouldn’t you agree?

She told me the gel would be cold, I asked if I would at least get flowers, she laughed and said no. She was in and out, so to speak, pretty quickly. It was a tad bit uncomfortable, but not horrible, not saying I want to experience this every day, but it was endurable.

All seemed normal there, she was going to send out for tests, to be sure. It was over and then it was time to get dressed and go, which I did, with a new story to tell.

Take care of yourselves people, we only have one life and one body and we should care for it!

{February 9, 2015}   Snow, snow and more snow

MGS said “Maybe it’s Elsa”. I’m inclined to agree!

Mother Nature, is something wrong? Do you just not like the Northeast? NYC is getting sleet, freezing rain and ice and Boston is getting snow, snow, snow and more snow, did I mention snow?

I got back to Boston from Atlanta just in time, I landed, dad picked me up, we went to a doctor’s appointment, then home in the snow. The stores were closing as we were driving, milk, water, bread, gone. We got home and GES got in just in the nick of time…they closed Logan Airport at 8pm that night!

The snow continued and continued and there were feet upon feet of snow, school was out on Tuesday, January 28th.

People went back to work and school the next day and life went on as normal and dad left on Thursday, roads were clear. The weekend came and the snow started Superbowl Sunday and didn’t stop. Snow day, school’s out on Monday and late start on Tuesday.

There is some snow here and there during the week, the weekend came and Sunday the snow started and didn’t stop, guess what happened today? Apparently Mother Nature has something against kids going to school and people going in to work on Mondays. Another 18-24″ total expected, really?

When do you think it might stop? Maybe we offer up something to Mother Nature…a peace offering?  It’s winter, it can’t last forever, right? Just too bad we can’t ski off our houses. Well, we could, but that would just be a bad episode of Americas Funniest Videos.

Enjoy some photos.

{February 8, 2015}   Good old fashioned snail mail

I may have talked to you about snail mail before, but I am here I am doing it again, with a twist.

My dad is a great supporter of snail mail, he sends letters back and forth with EJS, I believe LaLa does as well. There have been times we’ve exchanged letters, the old fashioned way, and I enjoyed it and here and there we write, but not consistently.

I have a very dear friend, CGS, who is great at letter writing and I actually owe her a letter, which I will be completing very soon. We were great about writing back and forth for a while, then life gets in the way, then great about it, then…

Well, it’s a new year and I want to try something. Three years ago I set out to blog every day and except for one day last year, I have done it. They say, as I’ve said before, it takes twenty one days to form a habit and I would like to form a new one.

I was inspired a few weeks ago and bought a brand new box of stationary when I was at Barnes & Noble, hard to get out of there without buying something fun, this time was no different.

So…I have my new box of stationary and I want to use it. I want to send letters, it has 30 sheets and envelopes, let’s see who wants to help and exchange with me. I am going to put a post on Facebook to see who wants to become my pen pal.

There are two people who will have letters in the mail in the next two days, I hop they know who they are, daddy…wink wink.

{February 7, 2015}   A day of culture!

Today I started with music and ended with murder!

Oooh, that sounded so ominous! Let me explain…

This morning I accompanied MGS, along with JS and the twins, N&E, to the Boston Symphony Orchestra for one of their Family Concert series, this was “Keeping Good Company” Musical Partnerships of Inspiration and Innovation, fabulous! Thomas Wilkins was the conductor and what a way he had with the audience, especially the kids! He was personable and witty and engaging and the kids enjoyed it all, I’m not sure if they enjoyed it as much as the adults, but it was a lot of fun.

The conductor talked about the pieces that we were listening to, made us think and questions and wonder and use our imaginations…what did this piece make you think of? What emotion did that piece elicit? How about thinking about this in this way or that. Inspiration and innovation, that pretty much sums it up. There were pieces we each liked and some we all agreed upon. There was even a piece from Star Wars: Phantom Menace, how cool is that?

All in all, a great morning.  http://www.bso.org/brands/bso/education-community/children-families/family-concerts.aspx

We got home after a nice lunch and watched How to Train Your Dragon and Despicable Me 2, both renamed by MGS as Dragon [1 or 2] and Minions, which I am sure your children have done the same thing!

Later, GES, ACS and some friends went to their temple for a Murder Mystery Dinner Theater extravaganza! “Marriage Can Be Murder!”

The mother of the bride has planned for the perfect wedding, but before her beautiful daughter can even say “I do” a bloody killing mars the happy day.

It is up to you, the wedding guests, to find the motive, and make sure that love lives “happily ever after”.

As soon as you enter the Temple, you will become part of the mystery and the fun, do the chicken dance, catch the bouquet, question the suspects and solve the crime. You could even become the evening’s “super sleuth” and win a prize!

This was a lot of fun, we had to dress as if we were going to a wedding, so ‘no jeans and rock-n-roll’ t-shirts. I have to say, there were very few people who were not dressed as if they were going to a wedding, some people even pulled their fur coats out of the closet!

When we got there, we mingled in the lobby area and had hors d’oeuvres, drinks and cast members would come and interact with us, thanking us for coming all this way for the wedding, giving us background, doing some improv, it’s a great time.

I have done dinner theater before, murder mystery, in fact, both on the actor side as well as the patron. I always thought about getting back into it. I have also hosted many murder mystery dinners, I think I told you about the one in Boulder last year, so much fun! GES, myself and some of her friends there tonight talked about doing one…I’ve got a new one, unopened in the box, downstairs…

We started with the wedding, but there was a murder! Oh no! So, while they were figuring things out, we went into the fellowship hall for dinner, even had wedding cake for dessert!

One of the fun things was that they used attendees as part of the show, like bridesmaids, wedding planner, father of the bride and the rabbi, who was playing…go figure, the rabbi!

In the fellowship hall there was dinner, dancing and frivolity and towards the end of the evening, we were asked to submit our guess for who dunnit!

The first thing the detective did was to read the “bonehead” answers and call people out on them. Not to worry, almost everyone there was a member of the temple or new someone, so it was all in good fun.

Then there was a prize for the correct answer, problem was…there were a lot of us. [notice I said us] so she picked a name out of a hat for the grand prize, tickets to another murder mystery event put on by that company.

So…I started the day with music and ended with murder, what a day!

{February 6, 2015}   The Adventures of Robin Hood

I heart Errol Flynn!

Last night, I watched part of one of my favorite movies, The Adventures of Robin Hood.

There are so many different versions of Robin Hood. Disney animated version from 1973,http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070608/?ref_=nv_sr_5, Russell Crowe in 2010, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0955308/?ref_=nv_sr_1, Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102798/?ref_=nv_sr_2.

But, I have to admit, my favorite, and I do love the ones I mentioned above, is still The Adventures of Robin Hood from 1938, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nIufsXSuB0. And it is probably because this was the first one I saw. Maybe it was a toss up between this and the animated version as to which I saw first, but I have more of an affinity for this one, Errol Flynn, swoon, as Robin Hood, Olivia de Havilland, lovely, as the Lady Marion, Basil Rathbone, one of the greatest film sword fighters ever as the twisted Guy of Guisbourne, Claude Raines as the evil Prince John and Alan Hale as Little John. If you’re not quite sure who Alan Hale is, his son, Alan Hale Jr, played The Skipper on Gilligan’s Island.

It is on my list of movies I would like to have in my collection and I am sure I will get it eventually.

There is something about this movie, every time it comes on tv, I must watch it, it makes me feel good. Robin Hood is such a good guy, true to his band of merry men, loves Maid Marion with all his heart, fiercely loyal to the king and all he holds dear. How can you fault a man for robbing the rich and giving it to the poor? Loving the girl next door, even if she is a Royal and he’s an outlaw, is there anything more romantic?

Black and white or color, this movie has it all…sword fights, romance, unrequited love, villainy, tyranny, justice, sibling rivalry, honor and a happy ending, what more could you want?

{February 5, 2015}   Drunk Dialing

Drunk dialing is a bad idea.

I think you know I am not a drinker and if you didn’t, you know now. I won’t say never because I did go out on my 21st birthday with the intention of getting sloshed and once or twice a year I will have a drink, like sharing a pina colada I the Bahama with the family, but it doesn’t get any more wild than that.

So… I haven’t drunk dialed, drunk texted, drunk called, basically, no drunk anything. [One day I’ll tell you about one of my fantasies].

I have gotten drunk calls before, but it’s been a while. Tonight, I had a friend drunk dial me, he knew what he was doing by calling, but that’s as far as it went! We had a few conversations, some overlapping, some in circles, some were in a round, kind of like ‘Row, Row, Row Your Boat’.

People, it’s fine if you drink, sometimes even if you over indulge, as long as you’re safe, but don’t drunk dial people! Wait until you’re sober and know what you’re talking about!

{February 4, 2015}   Duct Tape is a beautiful thing

If you can’t fix it, duck it! That’s what my dad always says.

When in doubt duck it! Or like the picture says… Duct tape is like the force: it has a light and a dark side and it gods the universe together!

I am inspired by the duct tape I have access to, some that were given to me by SDL, some I picked up at the store and what I have done with it. I once made a wallet from a kit my dad gave me, he said “There is only one person I know that would love this!” How right he was! DCM’s daughter, DCM, made me a purse once, I still have it, adorable! EJS made a great little wallet/purse that I “bought” from her sale, I still have it, love it.

I like to cover things and repurpose them, like taking empty tissue boxes and covering them and using them for things, like a tea box holder in the kitchen, I just covered one to use it as a trash bin in the bedroom and this weekend I am going to cover my new ski poles, they are an unfortunate color, but I have a really cool, comic book duct tape, they will look neat-o!

There are so many ideas for duct tape, crafts, functional, art [when CKM and I were at brunch a few weeks ago, they had some great Star Wars pictures made with duct tape]. Here are some ideas for crafts: https://www.duckbrand.com/duck-tape-club/ducktivities

How about furniture! https://www.google.com/search?q=duct+tape+furniture&biw=1024&bih=1076&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=7vPSVLKgKYafNpvLgbgJ&ved=0CCQQsAQ&dpr=1.32

One of my favorite things in duct tape… the prom outfits! The contest started a few years ago by and the Duck Brand holds a scholarship contest every year for the best prom outfits and these are clever! Enjoy! https://www.duckbrand.com/promotions/stuck-at-prom/year-book-gallery/2014

{February 3, 2015}   Carwash with MGS

This weekend I had a fun experience.

I don’t know if I’ve told you this before, but I am not a huge fan of car washes, never have been. I think my dad even remembers me not enjoying them either, I don’t know what it is, I’m just not a fan, weirded out.

But… cleaning the car is a necessary evil and in the spring and summer I actually love washing my car by hand, in the winter, it’s a bit chilly and Annie needed it, badly. First… all the snow! Second, she had been sitting under a tree and there was sap like crazy on the windshield and windows, needed to be done.

Sunday, I picked up MGS from the temple where GES and EMS were doing stuff and we had some shopping to do, but first, and you should have seen her face light up when I said “How about we go to the car wash, how would you like to sit in the front seat with the butt warmers going?” Oh boy! You know it! And away we went!

We got there and just before we went through, she climbed into the passenger seat, I turned on the seat warmers and in we went and oh the excitement and joy, how could I not join in! The look on her face and each new section, she called out what was happening or asked me what it was, so cute. It was probably the best experience I had in a car wash, I so wish you could have seen her!

Here’s something for your listening pleasure!
