{July 10, 2014}   I’m allergic to…

Am I allergic to something else?

I already have a list of things I’m not supposed to eat due to gastritis, you don’t want to know. You know I gave up dairy about two months ago, still dealing with that.

A few years ago I figured out that I’m allergic to soy milk when I had a white hot chocolate made with soy milk and my mouth started to itch, so much, I was scratching it with a fork! I thought it was a fluke until that summer, I ate some cereal with soy milk, same thing, among other things happening. So, no more soy milk for me.

Last week, I had an allergic reaction, same thing, took a Benedryl and I fell asleep and when I woke up, all better. I’m not sure what it was, hoping it wasn’t the watermelon. Today, I had the same reaction after eating a plum, no Benedryl, but there was some Claritin down in the hotel lobby, it seems to have worked.

Oh, please..I don’t want to be allergic to anything else! [I’ll keep you posted as I keep eating]

{July 8, 2014}   Lead Foot…Why???

I’m not sure if I’ve told you about my lead foot, but I have one and it’s gotten me into trouble.

I have had a speeding problem since I was a newer teenage driver, I would go years without an issue and then bam…speeding tickets and a few of them, then nothing for a few years and then…yup, you guessed it, bam.

It was bad in Atlanta, well, I lived there for almost twenty years, so that’s where the bulk of the problem was. I even got one taking SDL and her sister, DJL, to the airport to bring Miss A back to the states! That one, I would say, was totally worth it!

I have been doing really well over the last 3 years, but I have to ask…Why oh why does driving on the highways in Atlanta compel me to want to driver faster? Probably because everyone else is doing it, but…I don’t necessarily want to speed, it feels good to go fast, but I don’t really need to do that! But I want to…somebody stop me! [this was a holiday weekend, it could have been bad!]

There are roads in Colorado that are 75mph, wahoo! Give me more of those and I’ll be happy.

I started setting the cruise control on the car and that saved me a lot, I use it no matter what city I’m in, it so helps, but do you know what got me to stop speeding in Atlanta this trip? I left! I’m back in Michigan and no speeding! Whew!

Friends.. Today was very full and exhausting and that’s just what I am…exhausted.

I hope you will forgive me but I need to pass out now. More tomorrow!

I hope you all had a great holiday! Happy July 4th and g-d bless America!

How cool would that be? Go to all the places they filmed and BLEW UP!

I watched Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon…again and had a different take on the movie after visiting Chicago. I think I posted a few of the pictures from my tour and I’ll post them again.

But…my thinking was, how cool would it be to take a tour of Chicago strictly going to the locations that they filmed the movie, take pictures of the buildings, streets and bridges and then show you shots from the movie. Ooh yeah! I so need to do that!

I was inspired by two things, seeing the movie again and my good friend TS, who took her daughter KS on a Madeline inspired tour in Paris when KS was a child, how wonderful is that! I hope you know Madeline “In an old house in Paris that was covered in vines, lived twelve little girls in two straight lines …”  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madeline

I wonder how many movies or tv shows we could do this with, the possibilities are endless!

I grew up on an island in New York City, Staten Island to be exact.

There are five boroughs that make up NYC and I thought everyone everywhere had to know what they were, even in the south, not so. You have Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staten_Island.

There are a lot of good qualities about Staten Island and some not so good qualities, but can’t that be said of everywhere? You’ve got Snug Harbor, the Staten Island Ferry, The Staten Island Yankees, the Arthur Kills Dump [at one time Staten Island claimed to have the largest landfill in the world, it is now on its way to becoming NYC’s largest public park, oh goody!

Two of  my favorites and almost anyone else who grew up on Staten Island know, Denino’s pizza, established in 1937 and has, by far, in my opinion and most everyone else from Staten Island and possibly the planet, ha ha, one of the greatest pizza joints ever! They make an amazing white pie [ricotta, mozzarella, garlic and olive oil, yum!] and a killer garbage pie, for those of you who eat everything and of course, regular pie. They only take cash, so be prepared, but not to worry, there is a cash machine by the front door. This is a Staten Island landmark and I was lucky enough to grow up near it, within walking distance. There are now several locations throughout the NY/NJ area, lucky dogs! I even have Statenopoly, which comes in a pizza box and I bought from Deninos.  http://www.deninos.com/

One of my other favorites on Staten Island, which happens to be across the street from Denino’s is Ralph’s! Ralph’s Famous Ice and Creams. They opened with their first store front in 1949 and it has been a huge hit ever since! On a nice spring or summer day, you can stand in line, 5-10 deep, even waiting 30 minutes, but it is so worth it!  Besides, it’s another NY institution, people come from all over the world to have some of Ralph’s famous ice cream. http://www.ralphsices.com/ 1949

The reason I am telling you this is I was at a restaurant in Charlotte, NC, discussing with two friends, who also happened to grow up on Staten Island and while we were talking about Denino’s, one of my friends hadn’t been in a long time, but you can take the girl out of NY, but you can’t take the NY out of the girl. Then the woman sitting behind us said “They’re talking about Denino’s!” and that sparked an entire conversation, where are you from, what brings you down to the south, stuff like that.

So, how small is the world? Three former Staten Islanders meet up with three more ex Staten Islander in a restaurant in North Carolina! The world is small and keeps getting smaller every day!

Anyone else hungry? Meet me at Deninos!

{June 26, 2014}   Oh, the people you meet

Isn’t it amazing how the world turns? Yes, I know that was a soap opera, but it fits!

The world works in mysterious ways. Tonight I was at Boba House, vegetarian restaurant in Greensboro, NC and let me just tell you, it was FABULOUS! I would eat there every day if I could! I had a sampling of lots of things including “chicken” drumsticks, “crab” blossom [like a crab ragoon], spring rolls and pho soup with “chicken”, let’s just say it was YUMMY! I hope one of the other veggie places I try in Ann Arbor is just as good!  http://bobahouse.com/

At the table across from me was a family, older parents, young son and when I say young, I mean, out of college. The father and I started talking and some good natured bantering over the menu and I heard, as he liked to call it, a northeastern accent. Clearly he had spent a great deal of time in New York,  I just knew and when we started comparing notes, we were spot on, both originally from Brooklyn, his wife from Manhattan and his son started off there but moved with his parents when we was five to North Carolina.

It was nice to talk to someone from NY, reminisce about places we knew and loved and what we missed about NY and what he didn’t and of course, being New Yorkers, we talked about the fact that you can’t get good bagels or pizza anywhere outside New York! And bialys,  forget about it!

It made the evening more enjoyable and it’s always nice to talk to fellow New Yorkers! Whoever said New Yorkers aren’t nice have no idea what they’re talking about!

{June 24, 2014}   More holiday shopping done!

I love finding deals on things I know people will like.

This helps my gift closet grow and when it comes time for the holidays, I am either done or very close to being done. This makes me very happy and it’s something my mom was great at and she passed that skill down to GES and I. I have accomplished a lot, gotten gifts for people and when November/December rolls around, I don’t have to spend a lot of money all at once! Score!

When I moved to Colorado and got a storage unit, guess what went into the storage unit first, as in the back of the unit? DUH! So, that means starting over and I think I told you how I did that one day at Tuesday Morning, it was a great start!

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been going into a few stores when I needed something and found some great deals and I am so excited about them! I get tickled when I see something that screams “ooh, ___ would love that!”

So, now I have things for my gift closet, but I’m in a hotel! Um…any ideas what I should do with this stuff!? Who cares! I’m ahead of the game! Go me!

{June 23, 2014}   Friends in pain

It’s hard when your friends are in pain.

You want to be there for them, help them through whatever it is, take the pain away and make it right again for them, even tell them it’s going to be ok, maybe even want to tell them what they should do.

Unfortunately, all we can do is be there, listen, be a sounding board, let them talk through the issues and their concerns and if they want our opinions or advice, we give it, otherwise, we stay silent. I know that is something that I am not great at, but want to be better at, staying silent, it’s not easy, I’m a fixer, I want to make everyone happy and take the pain away.

To all my friends who are experiencing something unpleasant, making them unhappy, please know that you have friends who care about you and no matter how much you think you’re alone in what you’re going through, you’re not, we love you and will be here when you’re ready to talk to us.

As the saying goes…”Come again some other day”!  There are things we want to do and you are ruining them! Not completely, but still.

Wednesday night there was a huge storm, it rained all day and well into the evening. It was so bad that when I went to pick up KS to go to work, from the front door of the hotel to the car I got soaked. I was wearing khaki pants and when I got in the car, I was so wet, they were dark brown in front! Apparently it’s the rainy season, why? We’ve had snow, now rain? How about some nice even keeled weather?

Today it rained most of the day, which was fine for me, I was at the hospital working, but for CKM, she was running in between the raindrops! She decided she was going to go to the Archaeological Museum, Art Museum and Science Museum, she’s a museum kind of girl. It was easy to find parking, but dodging the rain drops is not that easy.

After work, we met back at the hotel to change and head out. There is an arts festival going on right now in Ann Arbor and we were going to go to hear a band play, but they got rained out, so we decided to go grab some food and Irish Pub fare it was! We went to Conner O’Neills for some futball [it was on, Honduras was playing Ecuador, Ecuador won, go Ecuador! Boy those fans are fanatic! We went for futball, good food and best of all, good company. it was yummy!  http://www.conoroneills.com/annarbor/

After dinner we walked around town, did some window shopping, found some fun treats for ourselves and CKM found lots of goodies to take home with her.One of the places was Cherry Republic, nothing but things made with cherries, for miles! And tastings, chocolate covered cherries, cherry soda, cherry wine, cherry tea, you name it, it was probably made with cherries!

After shopping, we decided it was time for dessert so we got in the car and headed for…you guessed it, Insomnia Cookies! I have been talking enough about this place that CKM had to try it for herself. We got a few cookies and some ice cream, sat and enjoyed our dessert.

Now we’re at the hotel relaxing, checking email and talking to you! Who knows what tomorrow holds, I am done work at 6pm and CKM is going exploring until then! Then we are doing something fun together. Can’t tell you what that is yet [I don’t know to tell the truth!] but I will tell you all about it tomorrow!

Until tomorrow, have a great night!
