{February 14, 2014}   Frozen

Tonight we watched Frozen, it was interesting.

Question…in most Disney animated movies, why do the parent[s] have to die or be dead already? There seems to always be only one parent, why is that? That being said, moving on.

As I had heard from a few people and I agree, it was a little darker; the parents die, there is a curse on the daughter, the other daughter gets injured by her sister, there’s a prince and a villain. There are also funny animals, a reindeer named Sven, a silly snowman named Olaf, and a horse that looked a lot like Maximillian from Tangled, but we knew he wasn’t, also a glimpse of Rapunzel and Eugene as well!

In pure Disney style, there was still a happy ending, which is good, it gets very stressful! It was a muscial through and through, the moment the main character started singing, I said, this will be on Broadway! It’s gotten such a following, rave reviews there are even sing-a-longs at the movie theater.

It’s hard to say who the best character was…Olaf, Sven…maybe Anna or Chirstoph, interesting that the non-humans could steal the show, huh? Overall, they were definitely needed for some tension relief.

The moral of the story? Love conquers all. yeah, that’s about right!

{February 12, 2014}   Random thoughts for a Thursday

Here’s the problem with my statement or blog title..I know it’s Wednesday!

I thought of the title, wrote it and thought, duh…but I was committed, so follow through! Today was another day of orientation, this time about the actual project, not just orientation about the company I am working for. And there were some random thoughts and things that happened.

One of the women I work with has the initials of KB, sound familiar, at least it wasn’t KAB! That would confuse everyone! I asked her what her initials were and she said she has a few nicknames that she goes by, nothing clicked, so I asked for her middle initial, N, so I put it together KNB and I called out KNOB! I said I’m going to call you KNOB! She LOVED it! So, one of my new friends is KNOB! Just say it, you’ll laugh!

Then…there were a few of us left at the hotel, KS and I went to dinner in the hotel bar, after a while, we saw MS, I like that, she’s a MS! and she joined us, we were catching up on our day, talking about books, authors, movies, college mascots, the weather, fur coats, then we started talking about fur coats and what girl didn’t have a rabbit coat when they were about ten, this was the late ’70s/early ’80s. Then we talked about fake fur and I said ooh, “a fabbit” coat [faux rabbit!] that cracked us up and MS said I should blog about it, so here you go!

I had more random thoughts pop in my head, but I’m done for now. What sort of random thoughts have you had…that made you laugh a lot?

Sorry, I laughed out loud when I wrote that! Let me explain…

I am in Detroit for orientation [details coming soon] and as I mentioned the other day, we are across the river from Windsor, Ontario. There were a few of us who joked about going to Canada for dinner, so tonight, when we were done with our session, one of the women, KS and I decided we were going to go to Canada and go to dinner. We were hungry, so off to the rooms to drop our stuff, freshen up and head out.

I called my dad and he asked what I was doing for dinner, I told him and he laughed, along with me. When I talked to TT, I told her and it was her old stomping ground, too fun! You know…the drinking age is 19 in Canada.

We got the car, found the tunnel, paid the toll to get into Canada, showed our passports at the border, apparently my answering the guard in french, when she said hello and asked a question in french was wrong, ok. We found the restaurant, supposedly in Little Italy, didn’t look like any Little Italy I know, a few italian restaurants and that was about it. We went in and joined the other six diners.

The food was decent, the service was terrific and the company very enjoyable. We laughed, got to know each other, we’ve only known each other for two days, but have become fast friends. After dinner, we drove back into the US, to the hotel, laughing all the way and up to our rooms, we’re next door to each other, agreed on a time to meet in the morning to go downstairs and said goodnight.

I’m still chuckling, working in the US, dinner in another country, home to sleep in the US. Tee hee hee.

Good night!

{February 11, 2014}   Penelope

The other day, I finally watched Penelope, starring Christina Ricci.

The description on imdb.com “A modern romantic tale about a young aristocratic heiress born under a curse that can only be broken when she finds true love with “one who will love her faithfully.”

I remember seeing the trailers when it came out in 2006 and I wanted to see it, but it wasn’t in the theater very long, but it’s on Netflix, so yeah for me!

When I saw the trailer, I thought it looked cute and after watching it, I was right! I have enjoyed Christina Ricci from the time she was a little girl inrmaids, then of course in Addams Family, looking forward to watching her as Lizzie Borden!

She plays a girl who is the great, great, great, great…granddaughter of a man who had a curse put on the family, she was born with a pig nose. Her parents, Richard Grant and Chatherin O’Hara, well, her father just dotes on her and her mother tries her best to find a husband for her daughter, who could break the curse.

Peter Dinklage plays a reporter that has been trying to get a photo of Penelope and expose the family, James Avory plays one of the suitors selected to meet and potentially marry Penelope. The suitors are all required to sign a gag order about meeting Penelope.

Penelope is clever and smart and sweet and loving and just wants to be loved, break the curse and please her parents.

The one person she is drawn to more than anyone and is drawn to her pulls away because he realizes that he is not someone who could break the curse or give her what she needs, but he’s the only one who doesn’t see her deformity, he sees her, really sees her.

In the end, she takes a chance, takes a step outside and discovers a whole new undiscovered world. Along the way, she meets a lot of different people, Reece Witherspoon being one of them, befriends her, who accepts her for who she is, and helps her discover who she really is and can be.

It’s a charming movie with a great message. Learn to love and like yourself. Besides, if you don’t love yourself, how can anyone else?

You thought I was kidding when I said what a day!

The day started too early for a Sunday, alarm went off at 8:15am, had to get up, get ready and head to the airport, amid the teeny flurries. I did have to stop at Walmart to pick up a patch for my jeans, pook, wish certain parts wouldn’t rub together!

Before I left, since everyone was still sleeping, and why shouldn’t they be at 9am on a Sunday! I wrote a note on the bathroom mirror for DCMsquared.

Got to the airport, parked at the lot in the row I was told to park in and waited and waited and waited, in the wet snow, for the van to pick me up, I finally walked down to the other end, slid a little and all the driver said was “My driver didn’t pick you up?” Nope. No apology, nothing? Nice. But I was on the van, warm and heading to the airport.

(Ooh, the original Willy Wonka is on TV, I’m happy! Cheer up Charlie! Of course, I have a whole rant on some of that movie, but I love it!)

I had an experience that was a first for me…
I am waiting in the sky priority line to drop off my bag and the guys behind me are talking about trying to get to their flight, it’s hard not to overhear some conversations. I asked what time their flight was, they were trying to get bumped to an earlier flight, I told them to go ahead of me, I had plenty of time before my flight. He thanked me and offered me some money, I told him no, please don’t, just pay it forward. He kept the money, then came back for his bag and said thank you thank you, me letting him jump ahead of me got them on the flight, I said no, he said get yourself a cocktail, I said I don’t drink! He told me to get a soda! Then he said they made it with five minutes to spare, then tried to get me to take the money again, said it was worth it!

He put the money in my pocket and took off, I looked later, it was twenty bucks! I have to tell you, it made me uncomfortable, I wasn’t looking for recognition, just trying to help someone out and you always hope someone will be nice to you too.

Off to my gate, got some breakfast and we actually took off on time, well, they closed the doors and we moved away from the gate three minutes late, is that a record?

One of the flight attendants had a bad attitude, nasty to the son of the guy sitting next to me and you could tell her politeness to everyone else was phony, bad form!

Took a taxi to the hotel, the driver was entertaining and pleasant, we had a very nice conversation. I asked where he was originally from, I knew it wasn’t Detroit. He told me we had twenty five minutes to figure it out! I asked a few questions and he really liked my first two questions, “is it warm and was it a long flight?” He liked that I didn’t make an assumptions about where he was from. It made what could have been a long boring ride enjoyable.

As we pull up to the hotel, I look and see a Caesar’s, I asked if there was a casino, we are across the river from Windsor, Ontario, I had no idea! Take a look, the water is frozen solid!

It’s so cold, I’ve upped the heat to 73 in the room and my are still cold!

I checked into the hotel, Marriott Renaissance Center downtown Detroit. It’s quite the facility! It’s on the back side of one of General Motors buildings, there are cars in a showroom, opposite from a food court! What? I got lost going to the food court, I should master it by the time I leave Thursday! (I promise, I will tell you why I’m here soon!) I grabbed some food, back to the room, put on my jammies and I opened the blinds, it’s snowing! Go figure!

The best way to end my day, aside from talking to you, of course…I had a wonderful phone call with one of my oldest friends, HW. We’ve known each other since grade school, became good friends in high school and then reconnected at our twentieth high school reunion. I know, I know, not possible we’re not old enough! Thank you!

The best was when she and her fiancé, FP, made their annual trip to Savannah and DCM and I drove to meet them, it was awesome!

She’s thinking about blogging, she had some questions and we chatted about blogging and word press and everything else that is going on. We finally had to hang up after almost two hours, got to get some sleep at some point!

HW is one of those friends, you can pick up the phone months, years, whatever later and it’s like no time has passed, never a quiet moment, no lag in or lack of conversation, you just pick up where you left off. She sounded great and we made very tentative plans for when I come to NYC, getting the gang together, since everyone lives pretty close, I can’t wait!

(Was someone on some serious drugs when they wrote the whacked out boat scene in Willy Wonka?)

Ok, big day tomorrow! Need to log off and get some rest! You too! Happy Sunday! I hope everyone had a great weekend and enjoyed the Beatles 50th anniversary tribute!

Am I wrong in not watching the Olympics religiously? I didn’t know when the opening ceremonies were, I thought Friday, then I thought I saw Thursday, turns out Friday. I’m so confused. We watched some events yesterday, then today we watched some skiathalon and boarding and figure skating, but that’s about it. DCM and DCM [tee hee hee] have been watching consistently since we got home, I’ve been packing and getting things ready for this week, prepping Valentine’s stuff to be shipped out, but I haven’t been that keen on watching. Something wrong with me? [Don’t answer that!]

Today was a nice, relaxing day. We got up leisurely, slept until about 9am, wow! Then eventually got up, dressed and out the door. We ran a few errands then headed to the Boulder office to show DCM around, very proud of her dad! Abo’s pizza, YUM! [watched a little Olympics there] then down to Pearl Street to look and explore, got some candy from Rocket Fizz, on to the Boulder Solar array, the Mall, shakes, sorbet and gelato for everyone.

It’s been great having DCM here, getting to spend time with her, laughing, sharing, having a good time, it’s meant a lot and I’m looking forward to the next visit.

We got home, they sat down to watch the Olympics and I got going on printing paperwork, checking in for my flight, packing, laundry, yes, in that order, got Valentine’s identified and ready to go, now I’m talking to you and that’s all she wrote!

Tomorrow or more likely Monday I will tell you about my newest and most exciting adventure!

[is it surreal for you too? I’m blogging before midnight, 10:00 even? I think I need to lie down!]

Go USA!

I know, please explain.

I went skiing today…fun and realized I was an adult…bah. I knew I had a few hours before the visit, and I knew I wouldn’t have a chance to go until next weekend, so I suited up, got in the car and Annie and I headed to Keystone.

We were about (ha ha, when I was telling DCM I said we, he said who did you go with? Annie of course!) thirty minutes from Keystone and hit some traffic, took a less traveled road with a bunch of others to bypass the traffic then got back on the highway. Right before the Eisenhower Tunnel, we all slowed down, there was ice and snow, no where to turn around, so just keep going. On the other side, same thing, slow going, ice and snow, but I was about ten miles from Keystone, I figured I’m here, might as well still go.

It took me about 2.5 hours to get there, not turning around! I geared up, the boots went on much easier this time! Of course, it helped when I realized they were on the wrong feet! Oh brother! My shins are a little bruised from the boots, but I kept going. I got on the gondola, made it to the top, put on my skis and pushed off.

This is where I had my realization. As I started down the mountain my body started to inform me it was not completely happy with me. My shins hurt, my knees were protesting. Now, if I was younger or had purchased a one day ticket, I would have said forget it and kept skiing, all day. Here I was, in a little discomfort, it started snowing, which looked very pretty by the way and I knew I had to drive home.

Grownup me said, when I get to the bottom, I’m done, going home. Pook. I’ve had a few defining moments, well, not monumental moments, but for me they were defining moments, I was a…ugh, don’t say it…Grownup! I went to Savanna once and went on a tour of the city, voluntarily! The first time I went to Epcot on my own and enjoyed the science and learning stuff, heaven forbid! I’m a big kid at heart, but I’m starting to listen to reason, sort of.

So, down I went, enjoyed it, admired the view, the snow and then headed to my car. Activity, fun…realizing I’m a grownup…bah.

Got home, took Annie to the car wash, she was sooo happy! finished straightening up, blew up the new air mattress, made the bed with new sheets and comforter, hung a curtain and we were good to go! DCM got home and we were off to the airport to pick up…DCM!

She just spent the last two weeks in Las Vegas with her sister, brother-in-law and LB and her sister LSS! DCM requested that his daughter bring his granddaughters with her, but for some reason she didn’t listen! However, LB was so distraught when her aunt Pow Pow, you know her as DCM, left, she cried at the airport, all the way home and for about an hour after that! She didn’t want her Pow Pow to leave and wanted to come to see Grandpa and JJ! So sad, cute and sweet at the same time!

We got there in time to wait for her to come up the escalator, then wait on her luggage, apparently there was a back up in holding. We headed to the car, dinner at Fazolis, a fast food Italian restaurant that we all used to go to in Atlanta, no longer, so it was a nice treat. On to the new CEC sales office, great job by the team headed by JS and TT for her fabulous mural, very cool. (Sorry, I forgot to take pictures!).

Then home, meet the kitties, get a five cent tour of the apartment, settle in and get comfy.

Who knows what’s on for tomorrow, I’m sure it will be fun! I’ll keep you posted!

Let me explain…

I was going to go skiing on Tuesday but it started snowing in the morning and continued well into the evening, that was out. Yesterday the roads were too slick for driving, so stayed home. Today, I was going! The roads had cleared up and it wasn’t too terribly cold, just minus 4, so why not?

Last night and tonight it’s -16, you have to use the numbers…writing it out doesn’t seem to have the same impact! When I left the apartment this morning, it was -7, then got up to a balmy 0, but no too windy, so good to go. I headed to Keystone where I went two weeks ago, I was comfortable and wanted to run there again, I’ll try something else soon.

The funny thing was that it was -4 here, as I was driving into the mountains…it got up to 27! It was 22 when I got to Keystone and stayed there most of the day. When I got home about 5:30/6, it was back down to 4.

Driving most of the way was fine, even on the mountain roads, no problem, got to the highway, still good, then I decided to take the pass, 6W, not the brightest idea. I had taken it last time and thought it would be ok, not completely. We made it safe and sound, I say we, my car, Annie, and I. This road was covered with snow and some ice, not too bad, but not really the ideal conditions for a beetle bug. There were a few times that there was almost no visibility, that was fun. So, as I mentioned in the title, Annie skated, more like slid a little and thank you for the warning indicator that we are sliding, I couldn’t tell! The interesting thing is that as we got closer to the resort, the road was clear, up in the mountain, what happened to the rest of the road. Needless to say, we did not go the same way home! Took the highway the entire way, will remember that next time!

I was also smarter this time, I ate lunch before I left and had a snack with me and a bottle of water. I got there, boots went on a little easier headed to the lift and up I went! This time was much better! It took me 26 minutes to get down the mountain, about 3.43 miles, not too shabby, wish that was my running time!

I got to the bottom and headed to Kickapoo Tavern, where a very nice Lindsay waited on me. I had a cup of chili and some hot tea, just the right amount. It fueled me to go back up, next run was 3.21 in 21 minutes and the third run was 3.19 in 19 minutes, something like that, apparently I’m getting faster. Someone said it takes them 5 minutes, I’m good with taking my time.

It was nice on the mountain, not too crowded and it snowed a little, very pretty.

There was a guy on one of the gondolas with a flask, I don’t know if I’ve ever actually seen anyone drink from a flask, outside of a movie or TV show.

After three runs, it was a little after four and I was a little tired and my knees weren’t thrilled with me and I decided it was time to head home, especially with 1.15 hour drive home. It was a pleasant drive, made it just after DCM got home from work.

The pass I got is the Epic Local pass, http://www.snow.com/epic-pass.aspx, it gets me into ” Unlimited, unrestricted skiing or riding at Breckenridge, Keystone, Afton Alps, Mt. Brighton and Arapahoe Basin with limited restrictions at Canyons, Heavenly, Northstar & Kirkwood. Also includes a total of 10 days at Vail and Beaver Creek with holiday restrictions.” Not too shabby, huh? Thank you daddy!

And when I saw the price of a day ticket, I have to go exactly four more times and it has paid for itself! I have a few more days in Colorado to use it and I will be using it in another location soon (details on that coming soon). The cool thing was when they scanned the bar code, I was greeted by name, always a plus and then I get emails with stats on my runs among other trivia.

Here are a few pictures from my day.

Man…I want a Go-Pro camera! When I get one, I’ll post video!

Today wiped me out! Goodnight!

I love my cats, the furry kids as we call them, but sometimes, it takes all I have not to wring their furry little necks!

That being said, let me clarify. When I first got Jymy, I let her sleep in the bed with me, that was my first mistake, she walked above my head all the time, never got a good nights sleep. In her defense, she has gotten better and will sleep with me and chill. Even after I’ve been gone a week, she will love on me and then relax, maybe sleep on the pillow above my head or in the crook of my body and that’s it.

Peanut is another story all together. She has to be by my side at all times, after I’ve been away, like I was last week, she needs to be touching me every moment, it’s been crazy! If I pet her with one hand, she looks for the other to join in, if I sit on the couch, she’s sitting on me or mewing for me to pet her. If I am laying in bed, she wants to lay with me and if Jymy isn’t in the crook, Peanut is.

The other thing, which happens often and this morning and middle of last night, is that she will wake me up because she wants attention. Really? You sleep 22 hours a day, let me have a few! It started last night about four am, she was crying and pushing my hand to pet her, then again about five and the last straw was 6:45 this morning, seriously? She was walking on me, pushing my hand to pet her and whining.

I am loathe to admit this, but i jumped out of bed and yelled at both cats kicked them out of the room and tried to go back to sleep. It didn’t help that the phone rang about the same time, what?

Tonight, I came into the bedroom and closed the door, they are going to have to cry it out. I am hoping that they don’t start scratching tonight or too early in the morning! I love them both and I love to snuggle with them, I just need some sleep tonight!

Sweet dreams!

I think my car was born in Florida or some other warm weather state. She spent some of her teenage years in Georgia, so she is definitely not prepared for Colorado!

Firstly, I can tell that she doesn’t like not being in a garage, even though it’s cold in the garage, it’s warmer than it is in a parking deck. I went out to the car tonight and it’s been snowing, so it’s a bit chilly. It was seven degrees when I got in the car, went down to five by the time I got out of the parking deck. After dinner, I had to go to the bank, it was one, then zero, a little chilly.

The temperature light keeps coming on, then the traction indicator. The two biggest tells are the stereo not coming on right away, sometimes I have to turn it on and off and on again and then there are the dash lights, when I turn on the headlights, the dash lights come on, tonight, the dials for the heat and direction of the heat didn’t come on right away.

The one thing that works right away…seat warmers, ahhhh. I put one pair of gloves at my back for when I have to get out and wear another pair I keep in the car. Let’s just say it was cold!

Even though she protested, she’s a trooper and got up and went. I did promise that I would get her a bath once a week, that seemed to help.

Stay warm my friends! Annie’s trying, you can too!
