{May 29, 2014}   Ok, today I felt old…

We all have those instances that make us feel old. Today…was a doozy.

When I talk to people who weren’t born before or when Star Wars came out. Someone who was just born when I went to college or high school, maybe I’m friendly with them and their parents are my age, that sort of thing. Today was no different.

Normally the classes we teach are made up of people ranging between mid-twenties, thirties to fifties and older and when I introduce myself, I say that I’ve been a software trainer for about twenty years and when the classes are older, I joke, “I know, I know, I just look 12” and they laugh. Especially when the class is made up of people in their 50’s.

Today’s class was made up of first year Pharmacy students, about 21 years old, although they looked much younger.I refrained from saying the same thing to the class because realized that I’ve been training  almost as long or even longer than they have been around. THAT made me feel old!

Then I went back to the hotel after class, hung out with people their age, who don’t make me feel old and some people my age and it was all better.

Goodnight!

I know I’ve already done a review of this movie, so it won’t be a review.

This is a great movie. It’s a true story of a regular guy, Vince Papali, a 30 year old bartender in South Philadelphia. He plays football with friends here and there and they encourage him to try out for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1976 when new coach, Dick Vermeil, holds open tryouts.

This is not a spoiler alert, if you haven’t seen the movie…there wouldn’t be a movie if he didn’t make it. (Who’s going to watch/make a movie about a guy who tries out for a football team and doesn’t make it?)

It’s not an easy time for anyone, the steel workers are on strike, times are tough all around when he makes the team, it gives everyone in the bar something to look forward to, maybe have hope.

He faces the idea that at any moment before it’s official, he could get cut from the team, the uncertainty of the future, the other players never making him feel welcome because he was a walk on and not a draft pick, his wife having left him at the beginning of the film, friends not sure if they are going to ever work again.

The entire movie was filmed in what seemed like sepia, very soft lighting, lends to the mood and feel. The soundtrack is great, all 60s and 70s songs that speak to tone of the film.

Bottom line is this is a great movie that I own and still have to watch every time it comes on TV. (Guess why I’m telling you about it) Every time I watch it, it affects me in the same way. I get goosebumps at the same time, chills, weepy, nervous, excited, amazed, it doesn’t matter how many times I have seen this movie, I will continue to react the same way.

(It doesn’t hurt that Mark Wahlberg is pretty to look at, come on, I’m still a girl!)

If you haven’t seen it, I recommend it. It’s a feel good movie, you have to smile when it’s over.

{May 27, 2014}   Going in the dark…

Total random musing today, which was inspired by a power outtage at work right in the middle of class.

Have you ever noticed that when you get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, you make your way there with your eyes closed or even half open, you don’t turn on a light and seem to function just fine. Ok, sometimes you stub your toe, it happens, but you get over it.You find the room, the toilet, do your thing, wash your hands and head back to bed, no problem.

But…when the lights go out, especially when you’re at work, it feels weird to go to the bathroom. There are emergency lights in the hallway or maybe outside light coming in from the windows and you can get around the office, but when it comes to going to the bathroom, you’re a little wigged out and worried about not having a light for the bathroom. Maybe you find a flashlight or use the light from your phone, you’re still not as comfortable as you are in the middle of the night at home.

Why is that?

The day started a little too early.

Jymy decided to start scratching at the bedroom door and crying at what I thought was 8:50am. Not so, it was not even 7am, really?  Well, now we were both up at that point. Relaxed, did some stuff around the apartment, laundry, showered, dressed.

About 9:45, I left to meet my friend, EA and her new baby boy, TJA. What a doll baby!! We went to Mimi’s Cafe, quite yummy and a great time catching up, it was really good to see her and meet her son.

After that, I headed back to the apartment, finished packing and all of a sudden it was time to head to the airport. We had to stop at the post office, but that only took a few minutes of a detour.

The flight was scheduled to leave at four, yeah right. I got to the gate, the plane wasn’t even there, so I got some lunch, eventually got on the plane, we took off about 4:20 or so, got in to Detroit and KS picked me up and drove me to the hotel.

We got here about 9:50, I said hello to everyone and got caught up, I gathered my things and then headed up to my room, I’m not sure what happened but it was after 11 when I got to the room and now it’s almost midnight. Where did the time go?

Here’s hoping you have a great week!

When I do something that I know will be bad, it had better be worth it! and today it was, well, sort of.

I know I’ve told you that I’m lactose intolerant and that about a month ago, I gave up dairy altogether. Another thing I gave up over a month ago was soda; I used to have a few a month, but then I decided it was time to give it up, since I’m not supposed to have it. Well, to be more specific caffeine and colored soda and I really like coca cola. It’s been an adjustment, but I’ve been making it work, albeit begrudgingly on occasion.

There have been a few times I have been desperate for both, but resisted. Today was another story.

As I am heading back to Michigan tomorrow for about two months, and was in one of those wonky moods, nothing bad, just wonky, I wanted something I really enjoyed and missed! I wanted a slice and a soda…please!

As I’ve said, if I am going to do or eat something I know is really bad, it had better be worth it. I decided to take a chance.

We ordered from Abo’s Pizza, http://abospizza.com/, the best pizza we have found in Colorado and a real NY style pizza joint, so you know I’m happy! I also ordered a coca cola from the soda fountain, there is nothing better than a coke from the fountain, yum. And let’s be honest, pizza is not the same when you have it with water.

I knew it wouldn’t help very much, but I took a lactaid pill with my first sip and ahhhh…that first sip was delicious and then there was the first bite of pizza…ahhhh. I finished the slice and sat and waited, it was slow going. Most times when I eat something bad for me, it hits within moments, the pizza and soda were doing their thing pretty quickly, but I soldiered on, I knew it would be my last for a while.

I let the first slice digest and then realized I was hungry and wanted another, so I dug in and had the second slice and most of the soda. It was heavenly, sigh!

And then about thirty minutes later, it happened and that’s all I’m going to say about it.

Your first question should be: Will I be doing that again? Most likely no. Your next questions should be: Was it worth it? Oh yes!

There is always a scene, possibly two, at the end of every Marvel movie. How do people not know to stay?

Maybe when the first Iron Man movie, produced by Marvel, came out, people didn’t realize there would be an extra scene at the end of the movie that you have to sit through the credits for. But we are 10, I said TEN Marvel movies into this and people are still getting up and leaving after the credits?

I don’t care how badly you have to go, you stay for those scenes! They are insights into the next movie, what might be happening in the future and so important. And something to talk about and “be in the know”.

Besides, they’re cool. And sometimes make you gasp and say “Oh!” Or “oh my!” Very important!

Yes, I know, your life will still go on, your destiny will not be altered because you missed a scene…or will it?

But come on people, you have friends don’t you? Don’t they tell you to stay? Friends don’t let friend miss the extras!

I think I’ve told you, I suffer from bouts of insomnia.

So…on average I sleep about 3-4 hours a night and catch up when I need to.  On occasion, I might take a nap or sleep for ten hours then I’m good to go again for a while.

Sometimes, that might mean that I’m going to nod off on the sofa while I watch something, we all do it, right? It usually happens when I lean or completely lie down, but not always.

Tonight it happened while we were watching something, I dozed off and have to rewind to watch again or DCM will wake me and say let’s go to bed.

As it inevitably happens, I was asleep on the sofa, as soon as I get into bed, in wide awake! Hence, I sit here writing to you…wide awake!

Maybe next time I’ll just stay on the sofa!

Can you tell what movie was on when I got back to the hotel?

Please tell me you said The Matrix!

Did you want to take the blue pill or the red one?
Would you follow Morpheus?
Would you follow the white rabbit?
Believe the oracle?
Eat a cookie?

“Do you know how to fly a helicopter?” “No, but I will.”

Did you think Neo was the one? Or did you know?

So…I was compelled to watch it and it brought back memories of the first time I saw it and it was good. The second movie wasn’t bad, but the third one, you can keep that one, not interested, unless we were doing a Matrix marathon and you kind of have to watch all of them, or else it’s not complete.

Final thought…everyone else wore leather, why didn’t Neo ever wear leather?

There are certain movies that I just have to watch when they come on TV, I might even own them or have seen them over 100 times, I have to watch.

Aren’t there movies that you can’t turn away from that no matter how many times you’ve seen them, you have to watch them? No matter how old, although sometimes, when they are on TV, they’re chopped to pieces and the language is dubbed, it’s hard to watch  but you give it the old school try.  Maybe they’re so old the technology is outdated, but they are from your childhood and they bring good memories, maybe where you were, who you were with you first saw it.

Here are a few of my favorites that I must watch if they come on:

  • Star Wars [IV, V, VI]
  • Die Hard [the original and sometimes #2]
  • Beverly Hills Cop [definitely 1, sometimes 2, I say that as i am sitting here watching #2]
  • Sixteen Candles [I think this is mostly chicks, but I could be stereotyping]
  •              Have you noticed that there is a scene they put on TV that isn’t on the DVD or VHS [now I’m dating myself!]. It’s the scene in the lunchroom where Jake Ryan                  finds Samantha’s ‘sex test’
  • Rocky
  • War Games
  • Moonstruck [again, chick flick]
  • A Few Good Men
  • Pride and Prejudice
  • Coming to America
  • Terminator [the first one]
  • Groundhog
  • Day
  • Caddyshack
  • The Abyss
  • The Princess Bride

I could go on, but I might run out of room. Those are some of my favorite must see’s [and you know as soon as I publish this post, I’m going to think of a few more!]

Servers can help you have a great experience and pook when they don’t.

When you go out to eat and get seated, the server helps to determine if you’re going to have a good meal/experience or a bad one. So many things go into making a positive impression.

How long does it take to come to the table to say hello, how often they come to the table to check on how things are going, recommendations that they make, how many questions do they ask and what do they ask, how long does it take to get the check.

It’s their attitude and how they interact, you can tell if it’s a good day or not. Was there too much information? Attention to details?

There are so many things that go into helping make a positive experience. Yeah, that’s it.
