{October 21, 2013}   342 Posts and Counting!

Can you believe it? I’ve posted 342 blog entries, of course you can, you’ve read every single one!

Some of you have read it every single day, others catch up on multiple entries when you can and others read every once in a while, who cares you’re reading my blog!

I remember when I started this blog the first time, I was determined to blog every day for a few weeks, I blogged a few times and just didn’t get very far, but this time, I made a vow, pledge, whatever you want to call it, that i would blog every day for a year and here we are 342 days and i am still going strong.

Well, there are days, i will admit, not so strong, I don’t know what to write about until i sit down and start writing, sometimes not even then. Then there are other times I have about ten things to tell you about. I know it’s odd that I write in the evening, I don’t intend to just write after 11pm MT, I know some of you get my posts at 2, 3 or 4am EST, but I usually sit down somewhere between 10pm and midnight. I didn’t start our writing this late, but they say it takes 21 days to form a habit and my habit formed in the evening and it appears that’s the way it’s going to be.

I am looking forward to continue writing after my year is up, January 6, 2014 and I hope you will be interested enough to continue following me. I know I will have some exciting things to tell you soon as DCM and I are taking a trip, not telling where or when, but you’ll find out soon enough! He knows, it’s not a surprise, but it is for his birthday. I can tell you I am going to see my dad in the same place we are going! What are the odds!

So, here’s to 342 and 344 and 365 and then some! Thanks for staying tuned!

{October 20, 2013}   Sleeping in…I’ve heard of it.

Is there a rule or tally board somewhere that says “You may sleep in” “You may not”.

Apparently my cats are privy to this determination and I was not informed, they are just in charge. As some of you may know. I don’t sleep, well, I can’t say at all, I sleep 4-5 hours a night, sometimes more if I’m lucky, just sometimes can’t sleep. Then there are the nights I am forcing myself to sleep at 4 or 5am, if I don’t need the sleep, I just don’t.

When I was a kid, I used to love to sleep, not sure what happened well, I do, but I’m not sharing. I’ve always been able to survive on a little sleep and then when I need to catch up, I do. I might take a nap, you know I’m really tired if I take a nap, but sometimes a nap is a wonderful thing, kindergartners really know what they’re doing. Other times, I might sleep in on Saturday until 11 or later, I’ve been known to sleep until noon or one, heaven!

For the longest time, I have been getting up about 6am or earlier, for work or a scheduled run, that includes weekends. For some reason, if I don’t have to get up on a Saturday or Sunday morning, I might get to sleep until 8 or 9, ooh, hold yourself back. I have found that a lot of the reason I am up so early on the weekend or maybe a weekday I don’t have to work…mewing, meowing and scratching at my bedroom door. What?!?

When I got Jymy, I let her sleep in bed with me, big mistake, she never quiets down, she walks over the bed and doesn’t stay in one place, this is all my fault and nothing has changed in over ten years. So now when it’s time for bed, “Ok Jymy Peanut, it’s time for bed” or “night nights” (who knows why that one works) and they leave the room to go and do what cats do, sleep, chase each other, their tails, whatever it is they do and the door gets closed.

It is rare that they, I should say Jymy , will bother me in the middle of the night, but it does happen, but for some reason anywhere between 6 and 9am, she thinks it’s time to meow and scratch and mew at the bedroom door, wth? I am sleeping, I would like to stay sleeping, but that is not to be the case and when I open the door and walk out of the bedroom to see what the problem is…NOTHING! There’s no fire, Peanut is fine, Timmy did not fall down the well…what is the problem? She then runs around and lays down for a belly rub, what?

Are there kitty Valium or sleeping pills? Nothing harmful, just something to let me sleep past 9 on a Saturday or Sunday? There will be loving, cuddling and belly rubs when I wake up. Please…Wish me luck tomorrow!

{October 18, 2013}   SPAM

Spam is not a good thing, there I said it, whew, I know people love it, but it’s bad, just bad!

Spam started out to just represent a food, I won’t say food group, maybe food like substance. Either way, not for me, I’m a veg head! But for those who still love it, have at it! There are recipes galore for you to enjoy and if you have a gmail account, you have probably seen the links in your junk folder for spam recipes, right next to delete all messages.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_(food)

Next, we have the electronic version of spam, which is what I will be waxing on tonight. Electronic spam, or junk email, used to be we only got junk in our mailboxes, fliers, now, it’s virtual…whoopie, well, the one good thing, you just hit delete and it’s gone, you didn’t have to kill a tree.

But it’s still a bad thing…how about the “real email” that accidentally gets sent to your junk/spam folder? I learned the hard way to go through or at least look at every single email/subject and recipient to be sure that I don’t delete something important, I’ve gotten emails from recruiters there, oh brother! Then I get spam in my actual inbox, fun.

Ooh, I may have an inheritance of a bajillion/gazillion/umajillian dollars! All I have to do is write back to my cousin/long lost royal relation and send them my account number, sure thing! There’s a part of me that always wanted to open a dummy bank account and send them that, they won’t get anything, well, I could send them my actual account, no difference, ha ha. The sad part is that there are so many people who get sucked into the scam, especially the elderly, used to be they would call on the phone, now just email.

Oh, I can enlarge my hm..hm…wow, who knew? I don’t even have one of those, but thanks for the offer! Hot Asian girls? Wow! Married but looking? Wow! Enlarge this, extend that, stay …longer. There’s even a “F$*kbook”! Ooh, hurry, where do I sign? “Baby, I saw you across the room, don’t you remember?” Who falls for this crap?

My mom was a teacher and if you knew her this story will crack…you…up? You couldn’t wear shorts in her classroom, she had sweatpants in the locker if you needed them. You didn’t cut her class, she would track you down, skip school? She would call your parents! When I subbed for her one day, they walked in the room and said “You’re Mrs. X’s daughter, we’re stayin!” She was great and her students and their parents loved her. She didn’t take crap or stand for it.

We didn’t cuss in my house, my parents didn’t use bad language, one time, I closed a car door on my foot, I asked if I could use an expletive. A little background for you.

She got a computer in her classroom one day, this is years ago, AOL was still the you know what. Well, she enjoyed the PC, but was frustrated with some things and she go a lot of spam and one day at the table she says (mind you, my sister and I were grown at this point) “You’ll never guess now much p&$$@ I want to…” (Hint, it’s another word for kitty), I think we just about fell out of our chairs!

The funnier part? She got an email from the IT department at her school. “You have been flagged for a high volume of inappropriate emails! My mom! Imagine! We laughed a lot at that one!

Now, we all laugh at the ridiculous emails we get in our spam folders, but they can sometimes be dangerous, aside from scamming people, there are viruses that get sent out and can do horrible things to your PC, what’s the point? I know it’s challenge for some people, hackers love a good challenge, well, go challenge yourself doing something productive.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_(electronic)

Rant done. I’m sure there is more that I can say but I think we’re good. I will end by saying there is only one form of spam I like and it was in a song created by the geniuses that are Monty Python and I leave you with them here…enjoy your SPAM, I know I do!

{October 18, 2013}   PT update

Hi friends, it’s been a while since I’ve updated you on my physical therapy.

It’s changed a big, some things are the same, then we added new. Is say new, like I have anything to do with it!

So…we started with heat, massage and electrodes using a Tens Unit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcutaneous_electrical_nerve_stimulation.
I can tell you, there isn’t as much “wow” and “oh my!” When the massage is happening!

Then we added traction, laying there getting my neck pulled and released, pulled and released, so now we have heat, massage, electrodes and traction. Then we added a foam roller, now I have one at home, I really need to use it more, I also have a portable Tens Unit, that feels good when I use it.

Then we added ultrasound, so we have heat, ultrasound, massage, more heat, electrodes and traction (those two were in tandem, multitasking).

We have since discarded traction as I have a short neck, apparently, and kept sliding out of it. So…now we have heat, ultrasound, massage, electrodes and heat again (together), for twenty minutes (lions and tigers and bears, oh my!). Today we added resistance bands, (lat pulls and rows, standing and sitting) and doorway push ups, sort of.

And in answer to your unasked question, some days are better than others, I do know that when it am getting my neck and shoulders massaged, it does a number on my arm, then it goes away, I doubt it’s psychological just for being there! I don’t wear the braces anymore and I think that helped a lot.

Another update in a few weeks.

Are you on Linked In? (Or is it in Linked In?)

Do you get random connection requests? There have been time I must admit, I accidentally have sent a connection request, what I can’t understand is why the person accepted, if they don’t know me. Is it to have as many connections as possible, like friends on Facebook?

I get random requests all the time, sometimes it’s from a recruiter, before they even contact me or a recruiter that works with the one I have been working with, some I don’t even know why they’re contacting me, just because I am a software trainer and trained in this field, doesn’t necessarily mean I want to connect with you, isn’t Linked In for professional connections? Then if we connect, do something…

If you’re a recruiter and reach out then try to recruit me, what are you waiting for?

I have had people that I worked with as a client, maybe I trained them or was their project manager, that i get, but some random person from that company I didn’t work with, huh?

I also wonder what people are thinking by the profile pics they add, pictures with your spouse and kids? I don’t think so, that’s for Facebook, not a networking site for professionals. Or why would you not have a picture there at all? It helps when someone can recognize your face, if they can’t remember your name.

Maybe I’m just skeptical, but…I’ve been contacted by recruiters who have found me there and I know a lot of people who have gotten jobs from someone seeing their profile, resume, skills and job history on Linked In.

I update on a regular basis, so recruiters, here I am, you who! If we worked together, went to school together, actually know each other as friends, maybe we met through someone, please send me a request, I’d love to accept, see what you’re up to and help you if I can.

But if you don’t know me, please don’t send me a request just because you’re bored. (I’m sorry if that was harsh)

{October 15, 2013}   Hulu vs Netflix

Hulu or Netflix…that is the question. Whether it’s nobler in the mind to suffer…through commercials.

Sorry, couldn’t resist. I do love me some Shakespeare, oh boy that was awful!

Do you remember when Netflix first premiered? (1997, a lifetime ago!) You could get DVDs delivered to your door, two at a time! Sometimes it was more convenient than going to Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, any number of places. But, you had to wait for the movie to arrive, sometimes it took weeks and then you couldn’t get the new movie until they received the old one back, but their hook…no late fees, big plus! Things have changed, you can still get movies delivered and now, you can watch instantly, (streaming).

Netflix was a good deal when it first came out, you paid per movie, then you could pay a monthly fee for the streaming and having movies delivered. Then the stink, they were going to charge $7.99 for streaming AND $7.99 for shipping movies, just as before, huge blowup, who’s going to do both? They lost a lot of customers at that point. I was ok with the $7.99 for streaming, but not paying the additional for DVDs.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netflix

Then came Hulu, a way to watch TV and movies, hmmm…similar to Netflix? A little. The difference is that Hulu will have TV show episodes on sometimes the same night after the show has aired, maybe a few days or a week later, Netflix may not have the episode for a month or longer.

Now, the hook with Hulu is that you don’t have to have an account to watch the basics, Netflix you do, you can get a month free, but that’s it, Hulu, you can watch anytime. Now, their bigger hook is that if you want to watch past seasons and some specific shows, you need to have an account, $7.99 for a premium account is not so bad.

Let me tell you…when I didn’t have cable for all those years, Hulu and Netflix got me through! I could watch old movies and TV shows and I was happy, no channel surfing, but I got by. I do have to say that some of the movies on Hulu I don’t get some really old, some really odd, not saying Netflix doesn’t have the same thing, but Hulu’s selection is really odd, well to me anyway and if you know me, you know that’s saying something!

Here is my one BIG, HUGE issue with Hulu…WHY OH WHY ARE THERE COMMERCIALS?!? This is with a paid account, why do I have to watch commercials? I could watch regular TV if I wanted to watch commercials! Sometimes, if you’re watching on your PC, it gives you an option to watch one commercial in the beginning and the rest of the show, sometimes the entire time you’re watching, no commercials, but that is very rare! And I watch on my iPad, phone, even the wii, still have commercials! Argh!

Explain why I am paying premium and still have to watch commercials.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hulu

(Shh…I got a Hulu account to watch something specific, I would love it if I could remember and a friend of mine has a Netflix account, we swapped account info and we have the best of both worlds, shh don’t tell!)

I do have to say that one of the things i love about these services/apps is that I have found some shows that I may never have been exposed to otherwise and I love to find a show (I think I’ve told you this before) and watch every episode from the beginning so I don’t have to wait week to week, that’s a plus. (I don’t always like to wait, go figure!)

So, the question remains…Hulu or Netflix…luckily, I don’t have to choose!

{October 15, 2013}   We Bought A Zoo

Charming, simply charming.

This was a movie based on a true story about a widower who decides it’s time for a change and moves out to the country and buys a house with a zoo attached, yeah, that’s about right.

The movie stars Matt Damon and Scarlet Johnsen, personally, and I know I’m going to get smacked, I don’t see what it is about Scarlet Johnsen, just my opinion (she filled her catsuit quite well in The Avengers, other than that…) I thought it was cast well and the actor who played Matt Damon’s son looked like him, good casting.

It was cowritten by Cameron Crowe, so you know it’s going to be good.

This was a story about love, loss, coping, not coping, hope, desperation, longing, adventure with some faith thrown in, faith each other and in yourself and twenty seconds of “insane courage, embarrassing bravery” after that, what could go wrong?

Matt Damon is the main character who just wants to make a life for his kids after his wife had passed and figure out how to go on, he has to, doesn’t have a choice. His kids are at interesting ages, the youngest is about six and just loves her daddy, his son is a teenager and living up to the title. It seems crazy to buy a zoo, but there are many lessons to be learned from the experience and the animals.

Never give up and life is the next big adventure, what will you do with yours?

{October 13, 2013}   DVR…

Might be the greatest thing since sliced bread!

I remember when DVR (Digital Video Recording) first came out years ago, I thought it was ah..ah..ah..awesome! Imagine, recording something, then fast forwarding through the commercials, wow!

Then not having cable, I wasn’t watching TV at all and when I would go to a hotel, I would have to watch commercials, heaven forbid!
Now that I have cable again, it’s nice to have DVR again because watching commercials stinks!

The other great thing about DVR is being able to record things and watch them at your leisure, it’s a little like Netflix, you can record two things at a time, but the bad thing is that you can’t record two things and watch a third, so you have to watch something that was previously recorded. But as I said before, you can record until your hearts content and watch again and again, but even though it’s record as much as you want, there is a limit and it will tell you when you’re close to 100%, then you will have to delete to make room.

Right now, we’re at 47%, it too bad. It’s hard, I have an amazing movie collection, but a lot of it is still in Atlanta, CKM is “holding” it for me, so, when a movie I love comes on TV, I will record it and watch it over and over and over, well, at least until we run out of room.

Ah…DVR makes me happy…it’s the little things in life. (I’m going to pretend my life has more meaning, ha ha)

{October 11, 2013}   Loss is never easy

Today I found out a dear friend and neighbor passed away.

JT [this is not someone I have talked about before] had a heart attack this summer and never completely recovered, I can only hope he’s at peace. And as hard as this may sound, I hope that there is peace and relief for his wife, PT and their family as they have been worrying about him and his struggles this past year. There have been several health scares over the past few years, each time, came back, but it was a struggle.

As sad as I am about losing this great guy, I want to celebrate his life…his goofy, generous, sweet, melodious, caring life.

When I moved into the neighborhood, he and his wife were two of the first people I met, they had the know in the hood. Very quickly, we became fast friends, along with another couple, DB and LB, we had a good time, hanging out, going to dinner, girls nights and parties, parties, parties. That neighborhood was a happening place when I first moved in,[that just sounded wrong], we would have parties that would last well into the evening, sometimes it was the B’s, the T’s and me hanging out around the kitchen table after cleaning up after the party and talking.

I remember when I started hosting tree trimming parties, he and PT would be there helping to trim my first Christmas tree and I would go to their house and help trim one of the 800 [kidding] trees they had, I had so much fun and then we would be out there on a Saturday morning with a bunch of neighbors decorating the front of the neighborhood and all the lamp posts. Then there were the Patriot’s Day Parades, who would be bringing up the rear after the horses and getting the biggest laugh on a riding lawnmower or with a shovel. Like I said, loved to have a good time and get a laugh!

The first year, there were 7 couples in the neighborhood who got together to take a Carnival Cruise to Nassau, Cozumel and Belize. We had the B’s, T’s, P’s, S’s, JP and N, me and the agent for the neighborhood. We had A BLAST! The B’s are expert cruisers so they steered us in the right direction on things to do, how to get free drinks, you know, the good stuff! Yes, I know I don’t drink, but it’s still fun.

The nice thing was that no matter what we did, every evening, we had dinner together, that was important. We toured the islands, snorkeled in Belize, drank in Cozumel at Carlos and Charlie’s http://www.carlosandcharlies.com/cancun/, some a little more than others. Let’s just say, the non drinker, JT had almost an entire yard arm of margaritas…by himself, then he and someone else headed back to the ship and when PT, DB and I were walking back to the ship, all of a sudden, there he was, apparently, they couldn’t find the ship, even though it was almost behind us! I’m not sure if we ever stopped laughing about that one!

Hey, I took my job very seriously of being the ASP…Always Sober Person, I was responsible for knowing everyone’s cabin numbers!

JT was heavily involved in his church, a great number of neighbors all attend the same church. He was not only a member, he was also ordained and would perform weddings for friends and congregants. He had an amazing voice, would sing in church or almost anywhere if you asked. I have memories of him singing on the cruise we took and I know that is something that people will remember him for for a long time.

For work, he was a home appraiser, really enjoyed his job and was so passionate about it, I know when I was buying in the neighborhood, he gave me some good advice.  JT was passionate about everything he did, no matter what it was, he put his heart into it.

He was passionate about our neighborhood, wanted it to be a happy and wonderful place to live, I think I told you that the day I bought my house, there was an article in the local newspaper with a picture of my house with a quote from JT and PT that it was a “Leave it to Beaver” neighborhood. We had Halloween parties for the kids before trick-or-treating began, caroling at the holidays, big parties for holidays, birthdays, didn’t matter what, JT was at the center of it, sometimes holding court, sometimes just going with the flow.

But there was nothing he was more passionate about than his family, being a father and grandfather, blending families together with PT, his family grew and he never looked at any of the children as anything more than his kids, there was never a step in the bunch, you couldn’t tell who “belonged” to who, so to speak.

JT had been unwell for quite a while, but a few months ago, I was in Atlanta and I stopped by the house and I had the opportunity to stop by the house to see them. I got to spend about an hour with them catching up, joking with each other and even though JT wasn’t able to communicate fully, he made his point and we joked and flirted and gave each other crap, i wouldn’t have had it any other way. The most important thing, I got to say hello and I loved him and got to hug him before i left and I will take that memory with me.

PT started calling me ‘Little B’ and I started calling her “Big B’, yes it’s what you think but very affectionate. JT was always Big Dawg to me and that’s what I will always think about and smile affectionately when I think about him and his larger than life personality. I won’t see him the way he was at the end, I’ll see the larger than life guy who made you laugh even when he wasn’t trying.

If you had the opportunity to know him, you were incredibly lucky, if you didn’t get the chance, just ask anyone who knew him and you won’t feel like you missed out, you’ll feel like you actually knew him.

{October 9, 2013}   Meet the family…

My Chuck Taylor Converse All Star Family!

(Ha, you thought I was going to post pictures of all the people you read about!)

I mentioned the other day I would introduce you to my collection of Converse and today is your lucky day!

Here is the whole gang:

20131009-222248.jpg
They even have their own basket in my closet!

20131009-222440.jpg
I even have a key chain that I got at the Converse outlet in Orlando! (The Star emblem fell off, so sad)

20131010-000711.jpg
Let’s start backwards. The black pair were my very first pair of Converse, they are low top and wonderfully full of holes, as they should be after years of wear, tear and love. I purchased these with my own money, my mom refused to buy them for me “I’m not paying good money for canvas!” So I pulled out my own $10, yes, I said ten dollars! so not the case today!

20131009-223302.jpg

20131009-223308.jpg
At the time I may have disagreed with my mom, I was a teenager of course, but I agree with her now! (How much would she love that I am saying she was right!) I refuse to pay the $35-$75+ they want for these sneakers. To date, I have not paid more than about $24 for a pair, except for one, which you will see and, knowing me, understand!

The next pair were blue high tops, I got them junior year in high school, see how loved they are? blue and red tracing on the trim, holes you can’t see and a flower I stitched. I still wear them on occasion.

20131009-223534.jpg
Next pair I got in college were maroon low top, I wore these for everything in college, including doing carpentry work for the theater. There is paint and glue and sawdust, the dark spots are glue, water and brown paint mixed together for the set of Man of La Mancha. I actually wore then last night when we were throwing clay, can’t get my others coved in clay!

20131010-001812.jpg

The next set include four pairs I found at Marshall’s for $19.99! each when I got back from Paris. When I was there, everyone and I mean everyone was wearing Chuck Taylor’s and I was nostalgic. I went to lunch with some friends when I got back, CKM, CA and LW and after lunch, LW and I went shopping, well I actually was accompanying LW who was looking for clothes based on her time with Max, the Color Specialist, he told her what worked for her and he was spot on and she took it all to heart, it works for her. As we were walking through the shoe section, I saw Converse, Converse, Converse!

The pink pair are actually Jack Purcell, part of the Converse line. Check out the ones with the cats, look at the inside of the sneaker, there’s a black cat with red eyes and see the one on the side!

20131009-232324.jpg

20131009-232331.jpg
The next pair I found was at TJ Maxx for $12! They’re not my favorites, but I like them and for a while, they were what I wore when I rode my motorcycle, they are hi tops, lace up and really stiff fabric, and until I found some decent motorcycle boots, they worked well.

20131009-232803.jpg
Next are my XX HI Tops! I la la la love these! They were BIG time on sale! $75 marked down to $29! How could I resist? I got the raspberry ones thinking I had ordered red ones, but is realized the red were a bit too red and I have more to wear with the raspberry ones, I love them! Next I found the white ones. My goal was to have all the kids in my life sign them, at the moment, not all of them can write their names, but I will make it happen someday! Apparently, I need to get another pair because these are all painted! I have worn them to two different colorful races (The Color Run and The Neon Splash Dash), I might actually have them still sign or just keep wearing these to more races and get another pair for the kids, hmm…decisions decisions (another pair? yeah, that’ll be a tough one!)

20131009-235139.jpg
My newest pair are the ones I told you about the other day when I told you about The Hot Chocolate 5k, turns out they’re not full chocolate color, more grey/chocolate with blue trim and pink and blue elastic sparkly laces, never had these kind of laces, so it’s a learning experience. It was convenient for getting my foot in with the new brace on and…my smart feet!

20131010-000032.jpg
My last and final (really? Nah, there will be more, I can feel it) pair to tell you about are the pair I paid $35 for and my most special and sparkly Dorothy Ruby Sneakers! I la la la love these kicks! See how they sparkle? As you may remember, red is my favorite color and these are my red converse! I love wearing them to sporting events, they make me feel special and sparkly! Do you love them?!

20131010-001157.jpg
I think there is only one person who might rival my collection, JO, who DCM and I used to work with, has a great collection himself. See what we wore to work one day, not planned! (we each had this as our profile picture on Facebook).

20131009-225531.jpg
Check out their website to see all that they offer (sizes, colors, low top, hi top, xx hi top, endless possibilities!)
