I have said this before and I’ll say it again…Die Hard is the Best Christmas Movie and after watching Die Hard 2 again, next best Christmas movie.
There is a great debate out there, Die Hard is a Christmas movie and it’s not a Christmas movie, but I’m here to tell you…it’s a Christmas movie. Hey, it takes place during the Christmas holidays, at an office Christmas party, and they keep playing Christmas music! What more do you want?! Die Hard 2 takes place during the Christmas holidays, at the airport during Christmas travel, and they keep playing Christmas music. What other clues do you need?!
Yes, there are a lot of great, classic holiday and specifically Christmas movies, White Christmas, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas (so many versions), The Santa Clause series, It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story, A Christmas Carol (so many versions), Miracle on 34th Street, Home Alone, The Year Without a Santa Clause, Babes in Toyland, Trading Places, While You Were Sleeping, Love Actually, Meet Me In St Louis, Holiday Inn, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Santa Clause is Comin’ to Town, Scrooged, The Nightmare Before Christmas, just to name a few. I didn’t want you to think I don’t know or appreciate holiday and Christmas movies.
So, back to what I was saying. Die Hard is one of the best Christmas movies. There’s action, adventure, shoot-em-ups, awesome one-liners, and THE BEST bad guy, Hans Gruber, seriously, one of the best bad guys in moviedom. There are a lot of bad guys, villians, evil-doers in movies and I could list many of them, but we would be here all night.
We have a villian, we have a hero, we also have friendship and trust. That would be the relationship that John McClane builds with Al, Sergent Powell who is on the outside, who believes John, and listens and does what he can to help him get through it all, there’s a serious bond that is formed.
Finally, there is love. Holly and John, at the end of the movie, are back together, we hope it’s for good this time, which we know…by the fourth movie, it’s really over, but for now, it’s a love story. Come on, he flies in to see his wife and kids for the holidays, maybe to work things out, he barely says hello to her, they have a mini fight, then all of a sudden the building is taken over by terrorists. He fights a wicked bad guy and his cronies, saves his wife’s co-workers, that weren’t killed by the bad dudes, saves the day, and all for the love of his woman! If that’s not a love story, I don’t know what is! And isn’t that what holiday and Christmas movies all about? Love.
Die Hard 2: Repeat, sort of. Holly is flying in to see John, there’s trouble in River City, by that I mean a convicted bad dude, a general, is broken out by some rogue military operatives, the idea is they are going to escape to freedom in the tropics. They picked the wrong day to do it, right? Yup, John is at the airport and he starts to notice things, things aren’t right.
He makes friends with Marv, the airport custodian and Barnes, who works in the control tower. Together, sort of, well, they support him, but he basically takes out the bad guys and saves his wife in the process. All for the love of his wife. You’ve got action, adventure, great one-liners, a bad guy and his cronies, and just like in the first movie, all for the love of his woman. I know I just said it, but if that’s not a love story, I don’t know what is!
There you have it folks, Die Hard and Die Hard 2…two of the BEST holiday/Christmas movies EVAH! What more could you want?! Mic drop!
