{February 20, 2013}   Phantom things

You know that feeling when you do something or your body remembers something because it was habit, that phantom thing (I’m sure that’s the technical term, ha ha).

I have that happen from time to time. I used to wear glasses, so when I scratch my nose, sometimes I make the action of going under my glasses.

Today, I put my hand on the gear shifter in my car as if I was going to shift into third gear, I lost my poor car, which was a stick shift, almost three years ago and I miss that car. (That will be a post for another day) I have a new beetle bug, but it’s an automatic,so sad…DCM has a truck that’s a five speed and he lets me drive it from time to time, yippie! so at least I haven’t lost my touch.

I learned to drive a five speed when I test drove one car, it had no radio and no air, I told them if they put air in it, I will take it, so I was the proud owner of a stick shift!

I love driving a stick, apparently so much that I ghost shift more often than I realize.

How about you? Phantom things?

{February 18, 2013}   Eggless egg salad

Ok, I know, if you’re not a vegetarian, you’re thinking ick or ewe, but if you are a vegetarian or
veg-curious, I have a new recipe for you.

I found the recipe on a box of tofu and I’ve modified it a bit and you can find a bunch of recipes online for different variations.

The most important thing to remember is that you need firm tofu, with firm tofu, it crumbles nicely and will mix well, and the consistency is good. if you use a different type (soft, silken) it won’t work as well. And drain it!!! Nothing worse than wet egg salad, real or not!

This isn’t a formal recipe with an ingredient and measuring list, just how I make it, take what you want from it.

For serious vegans, use eggless mayonnaise, I used regular, I’m ok with it. I start with 2 teaspoons, add more as needed for taste. It calls for 1/8 teaspoon of mustard powder, unless you really like mustard, DON’T use more than 1/8 teaspoon mustard powder! Next time, I might try some Dijon mustard (if I have any). Sweet relish added something nice, not too sweet, but enjoyable. I also added some celery, that gives it a nice crunch. You might like some red, yellow or orange peppers, adds a nice splash of color and taste.

The other day, I put some on a salad, it was yummy. Another time, it was with spinache, kale, cheese and orange peppers, Y U M!

So, if you are brave enough to try it, I would love to know how you made yours and what you thought!

{February 18, 2013}   Today

What did I do today? Well, it was nice and low key…iHop for breakfast, farmers market, Walmart, FaceTime and bad TV movies.

DCM and I decided on iHop, took a chance as the last few times we went, not so good. It was yummy, they have new melts, roasted peppers and spinache, who would have thought at iHop!

Next was Walmart to look for a birthday present for DCM’s granddaughter LB (well, LB is her nickname, her real name is LRS, but we call her LB). Her new favorite movie is Brave, or as she calls it, Merida, after the main character who has long red hair. LB has red hair, but as she’s almost 2, not as long. We found a Merida doll, that came with the three bears, that she will love and some Brave stickers, which her parents will probably not love, as they will probably end up on the car windows and a Merida card that opens to reveal a poster of Merida on a horse.

Then on to the farmer’s market, DCM’s first, hopefully not his last. I got my veggies for the week so I can juice, it’s been a few days and I’m not happy.

When we got back to the house, it was time to FaceTime with LB! LB is DCM’s first grandchild, she and her mommy, CS, DCM’s second oldest, moved to Las Vegas after she got married last year. She was talking with DCM and asked for me, JJ, that’s what DCM started calling me, so I have a title! And as soon as she realized I was there, she said “Cookie Monster, JJ?”.

So…the backstory…when CS and LB still lived in GA, DCM and I would FaceTime (video chat via the iPad for those of you not ‘in the know’) and to entertain LB, I would pick up this tissue box I have that had Cookie Monster, Elmo, Big Bird and Ernie. So, the second she sees me on FaceTime, she asks for Elmo or Cookie Monster, I put the box in front of my face and start talking like them, it’s exhausting! But funny! Today…I couldn’t find the tissue box! Oh no! So, I had to improvise, I was able to pull pictures of Cookie Monster and Elmo up on my iPad to show her.

We had fun chatting with them today, as much as a 2 year olds attention span will allow! I know DCM misses his LB, but it’s fantastic that they get to see each other as often as they can via the iPad and sometime soon, I’m working on it, we’ll go visit! (They’ll be back in GA in a few months as LB is about to have a cousin and DCM is going to be a granddad again!) more babies to spoil!

Then there was cross stitching, WOW (DCM, not me), pizza and bad tv and movies. We watched I’m Gonna Git You Sucka, a wonderfully bad B blaxploitation movie from the late 80’s that I absolutely love! It’s a Keenan Ivory Wayans movie about Jack, a soldier in the army who comes home to find his brother has OG’d, died from over gold! Drugs are not what is killing the kids, it’s too many gold chains! Mr T gone wild! There’s fighting, romance, thugs, lost loves, prosthetics, pimps, great cameos, pms, Kung Fu fighting and theme music, because every good hero should have their own theme music!

Next was this awfully wonderful series that I had to share with DCM and the movie it was based on. The tv series had only 12 episodes and it starred Rue McLanahan, Olivia Newton John, Bonnie Bedelia, Leslie Jordan, as a Tammy Wynette wanna be drag queen, and so many others that some of you will recognize and some you won’t but it made me laugh from start to finish! The description n Netflix: “Head on down to the trashy side of Texas that follows the warped antics of Peggy Ingram and her various and honorary offspring.” I think that about sums it up, rednecks, white trash, bible thumpers, drunks, gays, lesbians, theater and guns, what more could your want! The movie was not as good as the TV show, but they had time to perfect it! It was a wonderful, horrible cheesy show that I honestly believe was written to be like that and I could not pull my eyes away, I loved it! If you have to choose, choose the show, 12 episodes, 22 minutes each, but be forewarned, there are cliff hangers at the end of the TV show, we’ll never know what happens to Ty and Jacob, Bitsy Mae and Glyndora, Brother Boy or the rest of the nut cases! Do I care? Nope!

You’re probably as beat as I am now, so, I will leave you to say good night…good night.

{February 17, 2013}   Beautiful Creatures

Tonight I saw a new movie, Beautiful Creatures.

DCM and I went to Discover Mills mall to see Beautiful Creatures in the smallest theater we have ever been in! We may have been the oldest people in the theater, possibly with the exception of the man snoring in the back.

The cast was impressive, Jeremy Irons and Emma Thompson were the big heavies, leading a wonderful cast of well known faces and talented newcomers.

The movie takes place in Gatlin, NC. As described by Ethan, the main boy character, Gatlin is too far from Charlotte to have a Starbucks! The one movie theater gets movies after they are already on DVD and always get the name wrong (Interception, Finale Destination).

The town is very religious and wary of anything they don’t know or is different and they have ideas about the Ravenwoods, the recluse family that has been in the town for centuries and the new girl Lena Duchannes (Ravenwood) is shunned by the popular kids, they all said she was a witch.

There was a fight over Lena…was she going to be light or dark (I’m not giving anything away, just watch a trailer)… What is going to happen to Ethan? Will they be together? Will there be a happy ending?

One of the things I liked about the movie was that even though it had a teen feel/theme, it didn’t feel like it was being marketed towards teens, it was a movie that could transcend the generations. It was about family, loyalty, love, respect, hate, confusion and the power to make your own decisions.

There were some great one liners, fun effects, spells, magic, confusion and great lessons. The greatest lesson? Love is the strongest magic there is.

So go…make your way in the world, be true to yourself, love and allow yourself to be loved and you won’t go wrong.

{February 16, 2013}   The Circus is in Town!

Today I did something I haven’t done in years, I went to the circus.

Last week during the dessert fundraiser SDL asked CKM and I if we would like to join her and Miss A at the circus! How can we say no the circus? The circus, the circus is in town how exciting!

I have to admit Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Baily Circus really is the best show on earth! Where else can you see amazing acrobatics, very talented animals, clowns and fire all in the same place? Nowhere, I tell ya!

The package that SDl got included tickets and passes so that we could go early to see a rehearsal as well as the free show extravaganza!

When we got there, we went into the arena and there were doing maybe one hundred people there, it was nice, we got to see the Lions and tigers and how their train, we got to see a dog act and some acrobatics and of course the clowns! After each of the demonstrations we got to ask a few questions.

Then there was a break, then the pre-show, where we got to go and watch a little bit more, including Kelly Anne, the 17 year old Asian Elephant who played soccer, basketball, football and eat two loaves of bread! another break and the show started.

We saw motorcycles on tightropes, girls and boys on the flying trapeze, acrobatics, more animals, motorcycles in a steel ball, clowns, dragons, Shaolin Warriors, elephants, clowns, juggling, fire and so much more!

One of the cool things during the early demonstrations is the trainer talking about how they care for, train and treat the animals, it gave us an insight to what we were going to be seeing, it explained a lot.

One of the hardest things for me in regards to the circus is how the animals at treated, there were problems in the past about the mistreatment of the animals. It’s funny, the elephants and big cats at what I love about going to the circus and they are the things that PETA has a problem with. I feel that as long as the animals are treated well, that’s what truly matters and its difficult, because how else are we going to be able to see these magnificent creatures if we aren’t going on safari any time soon.

All in all, a great time was had by all. There were animals, clowns, feats of daring and a very cute soon to be three year old and her doing grown ups, what more could you ask for on a Friday?

Thank you SLD and Miss A for including us in your very fun outing!

I conclusion, I have just one thing to say that I will leave you with…”send in the clowns”

{February 15, 2013}   Gotcha Day

Today is Gotcha Day! We have to celebrate!

What is Gotcha Day you ask? That is the day that the most wonderful union became official…I know you’ve heard me talk about wonderful Miss A and my sweet friend, SDL (her real initials are JL), well, the day that the adoption became official…February 14, 2011! In the adoption world, the day it’s official is called Gotcha Day! So we definitely need to celebrate.

So, tonight, it was SDL, CKM, myself and Miss A looking fabulous as always, for she is a fashionista after all, at a nice little Thai place in Decatur. On the menu was good food, good friends, laughter and a whole lotta love.

I remember when Miss A came home for the first time, finally…I went to the airport with JL’s parents to meet JL and her sister, DL and baby A! Wow, it took every ounce of control not to grab that beautiful baby and squeeze and love, but I was patient…when we went into the bathroom for a change, she was all mine for a whole 3 minutes! When we got home, it was dinner and then, when I was getting ready to leave, I went looking for them and JL was asleep in the chair with Miss A asleep on her chest, like it was always that way and I have to tell you, I don’t know what life was like before she came into mine.

I have the honorary title of auntie! For those of you who are honorary aunts and uncles, you know what an honor that is! I’m known as AG to Miss A and I love the title. I have been included in Gotcha Day celebrations, Mother’s Day celebrations, birthday celebrations, holidays and just a normal Saturday. I really am honored to be a part of this little girls life and her mom is one of my best friends, I can’t imagine life without either of them.

All around the world, people are celebrating Valentine’s Day and I know a lot of people think it is a made up holiday just to get people to spend money, buy candy and flowers, but at the basest level, Valentine’s Day is about love, the love we feel for each other, whether it be with a spouse, a partner, a grandparent, a pet, an aunt or uncle, a child and parent.

What better idea is there that two people are brought together who are meant to be together and what better idea than Gotcha Day. Thank you for letting me spend it with you and be a part of your lives. I love you both.

{February 14, 2013}   die hard… again

Today I did something that was a lot of fun, I went to a movie marathon.

Every once in a while, when a new movie comes out, if it’s part of a series, they will do a movie marathon. I did this several years ago for the last Harry Potter movies, they showed the last 2 movies before they premier the new one, I did the same last May for The Avengers movie, it was Iron Man, the Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America and then the Avengers, it was 15 hours of movies!

today with the Die Hard marathon it started at noon, with Die Hard, Die Hard 2, the 3rd, Die Hard With a Vengeance, the 4th, Live Free or Die Hard, and finally A Good Day to Die Hard.

The great thing about the movie marathons is you get a discounted price for your entire movie collection, today’s deal was $20 for 5 movies you can’t beat that!

Now anybody who’s at least in my age range even younger, has seen Die Hard, we love it! it’s the original, yippie ka-yay mother blank! There is no greater villain than Hans Gruber, he set the precedent for a long line of badasses, there’s been nothing like him since and many have tried to imitate him none have succeeded.

So how many times have you seen Die Hard? Can you quote it, I can! Then we have Die Hard 2, it was a great movie a little silly but still a lot of fun, both have become Christmas classics for some! As I was watching these movies everything came flooding back that was the cool part and those of us who were in the theater, and they were very few, we were all quoting different lines and cheering when we heard our favorite yippie ka-yay!

I hadn’t seen the other to Die Hard movies, I don’t know why I just didn’t. In my mind the first to are classics and the other 2 just didn’t quite catch my eye. Well this being a new one coming out, and there was an opportunity for a marathon, I thought why not. I went with my friend BG and met his friend MF.

The cool thing was, in between each movie, we had about 30 minutes so a bunch of us would stand outside the theater and discuss the merits of what we thought of each film.

I enjoyed the third one, it was is a lot of fun, and it took place in my hometown of NYC so I was a little nostalgic. I like Samuel Jackson he was a lot of fun, and I really like Jeremy Irons as a villain, but he was a little bit lame, I just didn’t feel it it…was kind of awkward.

The fourth one was interesting because there was a lot a techno stuff, it was definitely coming up more in terms of new technology which was very cool, I like Justin Long, he plays a good geek, and I love Kevin Smith, although, it’s always a little odd to see Silent Bob talk in a movie. I wasn’t as big a fan of the villain in the fourth, he seemed like he was about to cry at every turn. I also thought this one had a little too much violence and destruction, didn’t like seeing that. I’m all for gratuitous violence and laughter in a movie, but there has to come a point when you say, really?

What I don’t get in some movies is why the character has to have marital and family strife in every single picture. I know, I know it adds to the depth of the character, an inner turmoil, well bully for character, can we just have a happy ending?

Here we are the fifth movie, A Good Day To Die Hard. It took a little bit to get into, it dragged in a lot of places, there were a lot of twists and turns, but overall it didn’t quite keep my attention as evident by the fact that I dozed off twice during the movie. from what I remember there were a lot of plot twist and turns and you never really knew the bad guy was, which is kind of cool.

All in all I had a great time, good company and fun movies, what a great way to spend the afternoon. There was a 30 minute break in between each movie, but you’re still sitting for about 12 hours.

On the way home, so I had the seat warmers on, I am going to sleep on my side, because my rump is sore!

so dear friends, I leave you with this..Yippie Ka-yay!

{February 13, 2013}   having a good time

Tonight I had a good time. I went out with a coworker, DL and her husband ML. We met for dinner and then we went across the road to Atkins Park in Smyrna to hear a musician that DL likes very much.

The company was great the food was good and the music was just right, out loud and fun.  Our 5 dollars got us masks and beads and we didn’t have to do anything for them!

Since its Mardi Gras, the place is packed. I don’t know how many of you have you ever been to a bar, and you see drunk people acting silly, or as they say in the South “actin a fool”. Well tonight was no different, possibly people acted more foolish because they were drinking more; with all those great drink specials and the feeling of being uninhibited.

One of the things I like about the fact that I don’t drink is that I get to watch people and don’t we all just love to people watch? And the more people drink the more stupid they act, which is fine for me because I love to laugh!

There were people in costumes, there were people dressed to the nines, there were a lot of beads there were a lot of masks and a lot of color.

One of the only real drawbacks to listening to music in bars…I took a shower and put on clean clothes…now they smell like smoke, the price you pay for entertainment.

Now, for those of you don’t know me, the reason I don’t drink is I just don’t like the taste of alcohol and when I go out with friends I would prefer to be the designated driver to make sure that everyone got home safely. There are enough nut cases out there driving drunk on the road that I don’t have to add to it. It’s not that I have never had a drink, it’s just that I never found a liking for the taste.

Besides if I get drunk how to be able to tell what was silly and what was it?

{February 12, 2013}   Where does the time go?

My mom had a great quote on her wall “We have the same number of hours in a day as Helen Keller, Marie Curie and Albert Einstein”.

This is very true, but it sure doesn’t feel like it, does it? I finished work about five and now it’s after midnight and I relived I hadn’t blogged yet! Oh no!

What did I do to fill that time? Well, it’s raining, I didn’t feel like going out for a walk or a run or getting in my car to go to the gym. I walked or ran every day last week and did a 5k on Saturday morning, I skipped yesterday (feeling a little guilt, but you have to take a day off, or two, so I’ve been told, I still feel bleechy) back at it tomorrow! So… Physical activity was not on the time taking table.

I cross stitched, I’m making something for a baby, wait til you see it, it’s so cute! I can’t tell you more about it, the parents will find out! I’ll tell you more about cross stitching and my craft addiction later.

I talked to a few friends, answered some emails, had dinner.

I decided to make some kale chips, forgot about the garlic and oil that had leaked when I was roasting last week, so…love the self cleaning oven! But I wanted to multi task, so…out came the George Forman grill! A gift from my parents years ago! I grilled brusssel sprouts and eggplant, I juiced for the next few days, emptied, loaded and ran the dishwasher, three loads of laundry and a bite of bread pudding. Whew..that was just in the last few hours.

I don’t know about you, but I’m beat! (But at least I know why!)

G’night,

{February 10, 2013}   Making the Bed

I like getting into a made bed every night.

When I was a kid, I didn’t care about a made bed, I’d get out and go about my day, then at night, just move stuff out of the way, get in and nighty night. Things didn’t change much as I got olde, like college, get out of bed, go about my day and then back in and out like a light.

I would change the sheets regularly, so it was just a matter of making the bed. It’s easier to make the bed when its not up against the wall and definitely easier to make it with someone.

Later, as I started living on my own, I started making the bed and I found that I really liked making it, felt good to look at the bed and then at the end of the day, it feels good to pull back the covers and slide into the made bed, snuggle down into the covers and go to sleep.

That’s really it, clean sheets, made bed, snuggling. Nighty night.
